In the case of Lovecraft, his personal views were horrid and the man deserves condemnation in that front, but his writings helped science fiction and horror in ways never thought dreamed of. He was the next evolutionary step between Frankenstein, Edgar Allen Poe, and into stuff like Stephen King novels.

He died before WW2, yeah. Personally, I think Lovecraft's whole worldview would have been shattered if he actually lived through it and saw the Holocaust images for himself.
