One of my favorite documentaries is 'Alone In the Wilderness' the story of Dick Proenneke.

Shows the progression of him going out into the wilderness in Alaska and building a cabin and living there for years. He ended up spending 30 years out there by himself and he started when he was in his 50's I think.
