The 28th Virginia battle flag is currently in the possession of the Minnesota Historical Society and is on display at the State Capital. Virginia has for decades asked for the flag back, but Minnesota has declined every single time.

The same Infantry that captured the flag suffered 90% casualties at the Battle of Gettysburg: 1st Minnesota Infantry, and they are credited for literally saving the Union from a flanking defeat by holding the Virginia corps back just in time for the Union to resupply that area. 250 men charged a brigade of 1200... and won.

Like every ancestor I had that was of age in the 1860s fought for the confederacy I've recently discovered

Another thing to know about the 1st Minnesota Infantry: "The 1st Minnesota Infantry Regiment was the very first group of volunteers the Union received in response to the South's assault of Fort Sumter at the beginning of the United States Civil War."

So these guys went through the entire war and are some of the biggest badasses in all of American Military History.

President Calvin Coolidge had this to say about the 1st Minnesota Regiment: "Colonel Colvill and those eight companies of the First Minnesota are entitled to rank as the saviors of their country"

It suggested a slave registry once for one of my ancestors but when I looked into it, it was in fact, for a different person. Possibly a sibling of my direct ancestor but I couldn't confirm that either
