Ingrown toenails are gruesome so my advice would be if it's early enough and it starts, see if you can clip it yourself, wash it every day and use fresh, clean socks. If it's oozing yellow pus or even blood, it is infected and you need to see a doctor ASAP. Surgery is not your last resort, in fact it should be your second resort.

If it keeps coming back, consult your doctor about getting a procedure that kills the cells to keep that area from growing back. That's what they ended up doing for me.
