Forums and messageboards were the first true social media websites because for a time they were among the only places you could commune with other users and gain access to information. Nowadays most people are able to use Wikipedia, but the internet pre-2005 was such a weird place.

If you want to look at it like this, the history of the internet dates all the way back to, surprisingly, the 1940s, just as Video Games were technically theorized and patented in 1948.
