The reason people believe the Lost Cause Myth is 50% incredible propaganda by the Daughters of the Confederacy, and 50% inability to conceptualize that their ancestors may have been horrible people.

I watch a cool YouTube that believes a good chunk is that latter. No one wants to be pro south since they live there, but also believe their side was pro slavery. What's funny is the only context I ever have northern pride is the context of the civil. Birth of the GOP is the North, and the North ended slavery, and we stopped the Confederates. Any other times and it's just land on a map to me. It just happens to be cold up here. I do love my New England peeps, though, but that's more isolated than the whole North.
