The weird rights issues with the first one and the sequels is why MGM was able to make the remake without any input from the writer of the current TV series and DVD sequels. Universal got the sequel rights, so it can make a TV show on SyFy, that they own, but MGM, who distributed for United Artists, never lost the rights over the first film. So they could remake the first one. Movie rights are really weird.
