i think the reason they are often in it, especially as faces i guess, is it can be fodder for storylines down the road. like x pinned the champ during the g1

Yeah NJPW usually takes that seriously too, if you pin the champ even in tag matches you're unofficially in line for a future title match even if the champ loses

They Made a huge deal about Karl Fredericks eliminating Lawlor in a tag match a few weeks ago bc of it and then he got the title shot a bit later

And they made a point to say he'd get the shot against the champ even if Lawlor lost to Chris Dicksinson which was his next defense. Probably easy to keep that continuity when they film 12 weeks at a time and commentary is recorded the week of airing tho lmaoooo
