He eventually starts to feud with Chyna over the title, and was set to drop it at No Mercy, but his contract was up the day before. In a famous moment, Jarrett held Vince up for money lest he take the belt over to WCW, and so he gets his wish. This results in 2 important things happening: Jarrett suddenly comes into serious money, and Jarrett is able to go to WCW and work more with Vince Russo.

So, when Jeff and Jerry Jarrett are set to form an NWA revival promotion, Jeff insists Vince Russo come on as the head writer (Jerry is dead against it, according to WONs at the time). The promotion, NWA-TNA, does go on to have Russo in a key role for the best part of the next ten years.
