I would guess they got backlash for spending money and resources to essentially do nothing up there so they probably just decided it's not worth it.

Yeah we realized there wasn't shit to do at the moment until we had better technology lol can only look at moon rocks so much

Plus they realized it would be a bitch to live there and apparently Mars is closer to earth's atmosphere or whatever so I think they started to put their eggs in the mars basket after that.
