At the time, it was a sensible option to ban hard liquor and stick to beer and wine. Alcoholism was arguably worse before prohibition than it was after, but there had to be compromises to it.

Ah, just for a historical stake. Nowadays, I think people are much more aware of the dangers of alcohol. If you're an adult, it's your choice. Keep givin' drunk drivers those 10 grand tickets though for riskin' other folks lives

It should also be noted that the 18th Amendment only banned the sale, manufacturing, and transportation of liquor. It never banned the *consumption* of liquor. Which is where a fuck ton of the problems came from.
