Yep, some book readers are very protective over what they like tho, so they see any changes as bad. I've seen it on Reddit a lot

i find books often have pretty mean endings too and tv tends to romanticize and make the good guys win

I think a lot of it is when people dislike something they feel like they have to pinpoint reasons instead of just "idk that wasn't good" so an easy reason to pinpoint is something diverging from the source material
