Like, Night of the Living Dead has a downer ending, and Dawn of the Dead has times where it's depressing, but there is no movie where just everything is as miserable as Day of the Dead.

Day of the Dead is more about how everyone has just fallen apart and can no longer work together cohesively. Night was about people's reactions to the onset, and Dawn was about the collapse of society in general, but Day painted a perfect picture of the fragmentation and misery of humans living in a post-apocalyptic world.
