I'm so happy ppl are realizing oblivion rules too. They dumbed down Skyrim for the masses and I miss the old lvl system. Great stuff.

Largely in comparison to Morrowind, but I'll paraphrase it her

But basically Morrowind was the last of the series that approached the ES games akin to DnD and true RPGs rather than the power fantasy that Skyrim invariably ended up becoming. Morrowind had diagetic travel, a rich environment, and some of the best writing in the series, coupled with a robust system of skills that actually had consequences depending on your build. Having a low score in a skill means that, within the confines of the narrative, your character is either a novice or doesn't know what they're doing with that skill. People complain about Morrowind being hard because they're missing all the time don't understand that you have to prioritize your gear with what your character is good at.

Oblivion began a lot of "casualification" of the ES series, with the introduction of fast travel, removing teleportation spells (like recall and divine intervention), diagetic travel, killing the mysticism skill, and rewriting combat entirely from a skill-based hit-chance system to a simplified collision detection damage-per-hit system. Oblivion still had very good writing, and the Dark Brotherhood is probably still one of the high water marks of the ES series.

Skyrim saw what Oblivion did, and dumbed it down to the point where it's basically baby's first Elder Scrolls. The writing is bad, the quest-lines aren't very interesting, the whole civil war doesn't have very many in-game consequences, combat is even more dumbed down, the skill trees of Skyrim are horrid, and while the environments are extremely pretty, the game itself is a mile wide and an inch deep.
