Like the chances it happens is basically impossible. But you could win the first 35 races, finish 2nd in the last race, and not be the champion. Like after race 36, they take all the winners, plus the highest people in the points until they have 16 drivers. Have 3 races, bottom 4 are eliminated. We have 12, 3 more races, 4 more eliminated. Down to 8, 3 more races, 4 gone again, we got a final 4. Whoever of those 4 finishes the highest in the final race is the champion.

Then you got people who try to defend it by pointing out how the best team in other sports don’t always win. But like in those sports, you’re not playing everyone every single game. Hell sometimes the team that beats you in the playoffs might be a team you didn’t even play if it’s football. NASCAR, you have 36 weeks to prove you’re the best that season against every other driver.

I've always thought NASCAR should follow a model like Golf or Tennis. They can have world rankings and a "season champion" based on total points but the big prestigious races should be like 4 majors throughout the year and those are your big money events everyone really wants to win
