This is off track but recently I went on a dive on "lost works" as in we know they existed at one point bc we have direct reference to them as like a common source in something that survived. Maybe I was just using my own biases but I felt like it was crazy the amount of context you could still gather from those secondary sources on these things we know long have any access to

Yeah it's actually crazy how many secondhand accounts still exist that reference those first-hand accounts that are lost to time.

Livy, Herodotus, and Pliny had resources that were primary sources that just got lost over time.

And sadly we just have to take their word for it.

Yeah they reference them like they're just Wikipedia today lol and in some ways there's an assumption the reader even knows the work so they don't elaborate

Well herodotus is his own animal don't get me started but I'm inclined to believe Livy on most things, just filter his biases

Pliny I think is amazing but you just have to remember the own limitations he was working with, I trust he believes everything he wrote though

He's just writing about stuff 300-500 years old at that time and it's a lot of verbal stuff so I mean, use your own knowledge of humans there lol

Herodotus was writing history as entertainment so he just took the juiciest theories
