I will say, the evolution of the Canaan religion is also somewhat fascinating.

But yeah I'm pretty sure there were multiple massive floods that probably got legends made about them that later for conflated into one "great flood"

The modern Judaism that we know today doesn't really come into being until approximately the 400s BCE.

Climate change both cause the fertile crescent to be fertile and eventually killed it, human migration and evolution would be a lot different if the Sahara never dried up I bet

Before that, it's more or less considered an offshoot of the Canaanite ancient religion.

I've been trying to research more about earlier religion but I'm struggling to find anything tangible, all just feels like too much filling in the blanks

Yeah unfortunately that's because so much of the earlier historical records were lost from when the Babylon Empire sacked Israel.

We know how convoluted the civilizations who's history survived were, there's 6-10k more years of crazy beliefs we've never even heard of. I bet they thought of some cool cats

It's much like the historicity of the early Roman Kingdom. We don't really have any historical records so, like the Romans, we've had to grasp at straws from between the 700s BCE until around 400 BCE.

Also I've developed a fascination with ancient maps. Sadly barely any exist either but it's so interesting to see the literal view of the world people had then and how right or wrong they were

Like, we know Rome was founded at some point in the 700s, we know it was a kingdom, and we know that it did start a slow gradual expansion. But we don't know when it really became the Republic, who these ancient kings actually were, or even who actually was the founder of Rome.

Even funnier is the fact that Aeneid was more or less a "modern" invention by the Romans to explain their own backstory (even though he is in fact referenced by name in the Illiad).

Virgil straight up took Aeneas and wrote a fanfic about him, while also subtly talking shit about Augustus lel
