I think the most prevailing theory, at least with canids, is that humans would toss them leftover scraps to get them to leave the colony alone, and overtime those animals would just develop a habit of relying on humans to get their food.

Yeah horses, cows, pigs, and sheep were probably much easier to deal with than actual predators.
