Most people forget the IC title was legitimately retired "permanently" in 2002, they just changed their minds 9 months later

Yeah HHH unified it with the WHC (during the Kane Katie Vick feud of all things) lol and they were gonna have the titles be World, Tag Team, and then women's/CW (raw gets one sd gets the other) as the three belts for each brand

But less than a year later they brought it back randomly and then did a tournament to also bring back the WCW United States title as the current WWE one for SmackDown

RVD unified the hardcore and European with the IC in like August and then a month or two later HHH unified the IC with world

2002 WWE is such a weird time, some of the best and worst stuff in company history happening simultaneously bc Vince wanted the brands to actually be at war at first (until Heyman started beating Raw)

Which is also kinda funny bc a few years later once Michael Hayes was head of SmackDown, he got Vince to see it as more of his baby than Raw and that kind of persisted until the end

yeah most people think it was just temp vacated which you can argue was technically true for like 8 months but the intention was to retire it permanently when he won
