So TL/DR, The Shining is actually King's most personal book, it was written during a time King himself was struggling with alcoholism and he wrote Jack Torrance to be more sympathetic, as a guy with demons who's continually being tempted by the hotel into doing evil. Jack Torrance in the book is a self-reflection of King himself. Kubrick took that, and just made Jack evil in the first place. An unsympathetic asshole who hates his kid, resents his wife, and is a miserable sack of shit. King hated the interpretation of Jack in the movie *because* Jack Torrance is Stephen King.
