In Japan if a company sues you for defamation, it doesn't matter whether statements made against the company are truthful or no, just whether or not it financially hurts the company.

Yeah pretty much. Corporations have a ton of power and they have a culture where employees also have to speak on behalf of the company. It's primarily why the whole situation with Nijisanji back in February was such a huge deal and people pushed back against it, because in the US, corporations and the general public don't expect low end employees to speak on behalf of a company.
