AEW head Tony Khan said he made a small change in his creative process that he feels has improved the product by simply swapping a column for a row in his written-out booking grid.
On Marc Maron's "Wrestling With Marc" podcast on the popular podcaster's WTF+ service, Khan said he started doing something different going into and out of last November's Full Gear.
He then showed Maron and his co-host a notebook where he does his booking and said he simply flipped a row with a column so the talents names are on the top with the storyline beats/schedule flowing down.
While a simple change, he feels what was described as a mini-storyboard helped his thought process which has made for better TV.
"I already kind of had a schedule of what I had planned week-to-week in different stories for different wrestlers, different matches or segments. At some point, I just kind of inverted it. I realized I should tip this over (the chart) and instead of looking at the dates and building it out, I kind of flipped what the columns were and what the rows were. I put the columns where the rows were and now I organize everything like this since Full Gear and I feel like I’m more organized even though it’s all the same information. It's just looking at it differently and it really helps me," he said.
Khan said he attributes AEW's success since Full Gear to having a stable roster and fans, but that the small change has made a difference to him.
The audio-only interview was recorded the day before AEW returned to Los Angeles in January.
Khan said he feels his run of TV since Full Gear has been the most stable and best TV run he's done since AEW Revolution in February 2020.
