SANTA FE, N.M. -- Police said an innocent family game of Monopoly ended up with a 60-year-oldwoman behind bars and her boyfriend in a hospital.
Laura Chavez was arraigned Thursday afternoon on charges of aggravated battery against a household member with a deadly weapon.

Chavez's 10-year-old grandson told police he was playing Monopoly late one night with his grandmother and her boyfriend, Clyde Smith, deputies said. He said his grandmother got mad because she thought her boyfriend was cheating at the game. He said the next thing he knew, police were at their apartment and his grandma was being arrested.

The boy told deputies that when they were done playing, he was sent to bed and never saw any physical fighting, police said.

"That's something I don't think any child should have to witness or be a part of. It's all pretty bewildering to us," said Lt. Adan Mendoza, of the Santa Fe Sherriff's Office.

In court, Chavez's twin brother said she has some mental disabilities and that he has no doubt she was off her medication or mixing her meds with alcohol on the night she is accused of lashing out at her boyfriend. He said the couple had a history of fighting, and police said both were very drunk when deputies showed up.

Smith told deputies that Chavez hit him over the head with a bottle and then stabbed him with a butcher knife on the neck, head and hand. Police said Smith is in stable condition and will recover.

"(It's) terrible. It's not something you should stab somebody over, especially if the poor little 10-year-old guy was there," said Santa Fe resident Jessica Sutin.

Police said the boy is now with his father, and his grandmother already has an eviction notice waiting for her at her apartment.
Deputies said they are still unsure if the Monopoly game was the reason for the attack.
