WWE signee Gable Steveson took home a second consecutive NCAA wrestling championship Saturday, retiring from amateur competition after the match.
The next stop: a future continuing to train pro wrestling with WWE.
The University of Minnesota standout defeated Arizona State’s Cohlton Schultz 6-2 to win his second straight NCAA heavyweight title before leaving his shoes on the mat to signify the end of his amateur career.
His second national title goes alongside his Olympic freestyle gold medal and three Big Ten Championships.
The 21-year-old Steveson became the first exclusive NIL athlete in WWE history, signing a deal in September after meeting with Vince McMahon in August amid some flirtation with the sport of MMA.
That deal was of the multi-year variety, allowing Steveson to remain in school while also training in pro wrestling at a WWE-created facility near campus. His contract begins after he graduates this May.
Despite having no experience in wrestling, Steveson was drafted to the Raw roster in last year's WWE Draft.
Bobby, Gable’s brother, is also under WWE contract and currently training at the WWE Performance Center as Damon Kemp.
