The company wants Steveson’s attention on wrestling.
Over the last several months, Gable Steveson has wrestled at multiple NXT house shows. Prior to the
1/5 Friday Night SmackDown, he went one-on-one with Cedric Alexander in a dark match.
The Olympic gold medalist continued his amateur wrestling career while signed to WWE. He wrestled for the University of Minnesota Gophers and their head coach, Brandon Eggum, provided an update on Steveson’s status via
a video on the Gophers’ X account.
He stated that Steveson will not be wrestling for them this upcoming season. He added that WWE wants him focused on his wrestling career. Eggum spoke highly of Steveson and what he means to the program and wished him the best.
Also, quick update on Gable Steveson. Unfortunately, he will not be able to compete for us this season. He is a great competitor. He’s always wanted to compete for the University of Minnesota. But ultimately, the WWE would prefer that he’s solely focused on his professional wrestling career at this time. So whenever he’s not at the WWE Performance Center down in Florida, he’s up here in our realm working with our heavyweights which is awesome. We just can’t thank him enough for the impact he’s had on our program. We’ve loved following him and watching him compete on the mat, he’s amazing and now we’re excited to watch him in his WWE career so, thank you Gable Steveson from our program and from all the Gopher fans across the country and the world and we look forward to watching you in your career here moving forward.
During the summer of 2023, Steveson made his WWE in-ring debut when he took on Baron Corbin at
NXT Great American Bash. He fell in defeat to Corbin in that bout.
Steveson’s brother Damon Kemp is regularly featured on NXT TV as a member of No Quarter Catch Crew (Drew Gulak, Kemp, Charlie Dempsey & Myles Borne).
