The French Open started a couple of days ago and will run until the 10th of June. Some big upsets have occured already with the biggest being Serena Williams losing in the first round to unknown French woman Virginie Razzano in three sets. It was a three hour epic and there were a lot of errors from both players in this match. Razzano only won on her ninth match point in that final game! I can't remember any other player failing to convert that many players in a match let alone one game. As for the Australians Lleyton Hewitt predictably lost in the first round and his excuse after the match was that he wasn't used to playing injury free!!! The guy was a champion but he should have retired a couple of years ago when the injuries really set in. Tomic and Stosur both had easy first round wins which is promising since this is Tomic's first win here and Stosur regularly chokes so it is nice that she made it through this time.
Unfortunately Tomic lost his second round match. Poor performance by him considering he beat that same opponent on clay two weeks earlier. Clay will always be his weakest surface but he seemed to rush himself during that game and went down in straight sets. John Isner lost another epic battle, this time to Paul-Henri Mathieu, it was 18-16 in the final set.
Sharapova won the women's singles title in the end. She dominated throughout the tournament and she has now won each of the Grand Slams. Stosur unfortunately choked again this time in the semi-finals against another Italian player that she had a 5-0 record against. It should have been an relatively easy win but she lost in three sets thanks in part to 50 unforced errors.
Nadal won his seventh French Open defeating Djokovic in the final in four sets. Nadal is simply unstopable on clay and has now won 11 grand slams in total. How long can his dominance on clay last? Surely another challenger has to come along on clay in the next couple of years.
