Apparently we shouldn't focus on THIS tragedy just because there's bad stuff elsewhere in the world?

The media can't report everything bad (or good) in the world, of course they'll pick up on something happening in our own country or culture.

Nope, never even hinted at that. Just the fact that it happens in the US and now I can't escape hearing about it and I'm not even a huge media consumer. While things that are more tragic happen every day and you'll never even hear a 30 second news clip on it unless you actively seek it out.

It is media sensationalism. The government loves this as it makes the public alert/scared which allows them to work without people concerning themselves with their own civil liberties. This is the same way we got a bunch of bullshit laws like the Patriot Act after 9/11.

I watched SportsCenter last night after the Lakers game and there were no fewer than 15 mentions of the Boston Marathon events. On a sports show. They beat it into your skull until you are checking your mailbox for pressure cooker bombs before opening it.

I'm not saying they shouldn't cover the tragedy that happened. I honestly can't believe you are dumb enough to interpret my post that way considering your universal praise around here for being so amazingly perceptive.

Great post ^

I think most people assume those complaining about it being raped by the media are heartless, or ignorant.

At the risk of seeming like a pompous ass, I think it is the people who sit around eating up the media pounding a story like this that are the ignorant ones. If you sit around watching CNN/Fox News cover the Boston Marathon bombing all day you are in essence saying (with your actions) that to you that event was more important than any other number of tragedies that happened not only across the globe but in this country on that very same day and in the days to follow it.

"Bombing" is just one of the media buzz words like "terrorism" that brings eye balls to tv screens. And Uncle Sam loves it because now people are less likely to question why the government is doing things they are. By gawd bad people like at the Boston Marathon, gotta protect our citizens.

Your post was easy to interpret that way with how you wrote it. When someone says "15 people died in Pakistan, but no, let's focus on the tragedy of three Americans", it sounds very much like what I've seen all over the internet before, which is dismissing one tragedy because of something else that's happening in the world... What with people going on videos about someone killing themselves or interviews with a girl in a wheelchair as a result of the Columbine shootings and dismissing it because "omg, who cares, there's starving children in the world." These people are ignorant and usually people who haven't suffered hardships of any kind, or else they'd shut the fuck up. That kind of stuff touches a nerve with me considering some of the stuff I've been through (which I obviously won't get into here.)

I could make an entire post ranting about these kind of people (though there's a slightly valid point there) and talk about how when something is bad or tragic enough, it doesn't matter how it ranks or compares to other things, it's fucking bad and that's all there is to it.

Anyway, fair enough if I interpreted the post wrong. I could even add my own points to the idea that just because it happens in America, it's automatically more tragic... Like people getting off of work in Canada because of 9/11 (not downplaying the tragedy, but it only really affected Americans on that day) or how Hurricane Katrina was all over the news worldwide, even though other things like this happen all the time but don't get worldwide coverage like it did.

I don't think he meant "More people died here so the boston killings don't matter because they get more media attention" More like "the current situation doesn't deserve the media attention it's getting", especially since there are a lot more tragic things happening everyday that we don't even hear about. A church was bombed last month and 5 people died, don't remember seeing it in any mainstream media coverage. 7 people in Afghanistan died by a road bomb a day after the Boston Bombing. Not even a 30 second showing on CNN saying "Oh, hey 7 people died." Or even a facebook page made about them. While the Boston Massacre will get weeks of coverage and all of America is in "mourning."

Imagine the bombs going off while they're still in the backpacks (assuming these are the guys who planted the bombs). That would've been a pretty brutal scene :cole:

ESPN is nothing more than a half TMZ half feel good story bullshit with a sports twist. Fuck ESPN. They are to sports what MTV is to music.

Yeah, I hardly ever tune in to ESPN anymore (though I haven't been watching much sports in general for a while now). But yeah, they legit have topics like "Lebron James wore blue socks, is this good or bad??!" "Tom Brady's wife tweeted *whatever*.. is this bad for the Patriots?!"

Seriously, what the fuck is that shit?
