The big news I have just seen is that Ox-Chamberlain might be starting tonight, if so its a bold move, but one I admire. Also if it means no Downing then I am all for that.

Yeah, I just read that too. I'm not surprised, since Downing had a poor season at Liverpool. Oxlade-Chamberlain is a young, exciting prospect who Arsenal paid quite a bit of money for last summer and had a pretty good season. Although he has 3 caps, I think he could be one to watch out for today.

Well you know I expected him to be used mostly as a impact sub in the early games, or maybe to get a start in the second or third match, but I can kind of see the logic as I do think France might have a weakness in the full back areas and Ox will show no fear.

Well it wasn't bad at all. Ox had a good game. If we play like we did today once Rooney is back then we might have an alright tournament. As Stevie G said after: "It's a platform" - true true, good start. Shame about some of the referee's decisions but what can ya do...

So does anyone wanna defend Milner now?

Horrible player, why he didn't start Theo is beyond me.

Theo definitely would've been the better choice at RM than Milner against France. But still, we got a draw which is a fair result in the end. I would've taken a draw beforehand.

Hart's save from Diarra's header was amazing, btw.

No Milner had a poor game I agree, but considering we got a credible result against one of the best teams in the tournument and put in a solid display I think you should be focusing more on the positives than negatives.

My player ratings for England today: Hart 6, Lescott 7, Terry 6, Johnson 7, Cole 6, Parker 5, Gerrard 8, Milner 4, Oxland-Chambelain 6, Young 7, Wellbeck 7, subs Defoe 6, Henderson 5, Wallcott 5.

Recaps of all 8 are here from my blog- The Uncommon One: Euro Cup/NBA Finals Smash

Poland 1 Greece 1- The opener of the tournament wasn't the prettiest game but it brought great drama and a story to it. The opening ceremony was over the hop and beautiful as usual but the game brought more excitement that I expected. Poland were absolutely dominant in the first half creating chances and Greece never looked like a threat. They were moving the ball fluidly and it was shocking to see them only score one goal. It was a great header by Lewandowski with some awful positioning by Chaikas who is 38 and may have been a mistake to start. He looked unsteady through most of the game and has to be questioned. The major story from the first half was Papsatahpopulous getting sent off after two cheap yellow cards. It was very questionable to send him off this early but it gave Poland a huge advantage going into the second half. Instead Greece seemed to be even more fired up and Poland's below average defense was getting exposed quickly. Dimitris Salpigidis scored to tie the game after some sloppy clear outs by Poland which made the game even more intense. Then another shocking event happened with Szczesny getting sent off for an obvious foul on a break away. It turned to save Poland a point when Karagounis missed the penalty which was poorly taken. I was waiting for Arthur Boruc to pop up for his epic comeback in Poland but it was an unknown player named Tyton and he made the save. The game was 10 on 10 for the last 25 minutes but it failed to create memorable moments. Greece seemed more likely to score and had a goal taken away from off side. Poland lost their killer instinct and seemed to lost their edge that they had in the first half. It ended just like I predicted in a 1-1 draw with both teams feeling that they should have taken three points. I'm not sure who gets man of the match but I'm going to give it to Salpigidis because he really seemed to energize the Greeks. Gekas and Samaras both looked out of it and didn't create much but Salpigidis brought energy along with the goal. It wasn't a memorable game but the drama was fun to watch and it made for a good story.

Russia 4 Czech Republic 1- I missed the game live and it seemed like I missed some crafty one sided play. Russia looked fantastic in the highlights that I saw creating chances every five minutes at times. This game could have been worse if Kerzhakov didn't miss three great chances to score. Despite his one goal, I question starting him over Pogrenbnyak or Pavylunchenko. Both guys have had moment of brilliance on the global league stage and I think they bring more to Russia's strike force. Alan Dzagoev didn't look lackluster though as he scored two goals. His first goal was off a broken play where Kerzhakov should have scored then Cech was late to react with Dzagoev being alert to shoot. Kerzahakov eventually made it 2 quickly after great work from Andrei Arshavin. Arshavin was fantastic all game long despite not getting on the score sheet. His passing was on par and he seemed to get to wherever he wanted to on the pitch. His through ball split two defenders with Kerzahakov finally putting one in the back of the net. Czechs got one back which was a shocker but Russia simply fell asleep. Tomas Rosicky had a decent game which included an assist to Vaclav Pilar which was well finished by him. Czechs were completely dominated in the midfield though and never got into the flow of the game. Russia eventually put the game to rest with Dzagoev scoring on a great finish with an assist to super sub Pavylunchenko. Pavylunchenko made a huge impact with a pass through two men to set Dzagoev free to score. Then in the few remaining minutes of the game, Pavylunchenko scored on a great individual effort with three people defending him. It was a terrific goal that Cech had no chance of saving similar to all of the goals Russia scored. I'm surprised how poor the Czech defense was and how Cech was incapable of stopping anything. The man of the match had to be Arshavin because his pace was unstoppable and it seemed like he was the player to start up the attacks. Despite underperforming for Arsenal, he always seems to play very well for Russia.

Denmark 1 Holland 0- The upset of the tournament so far has to go to Denmark. This was a game of missed chances even though Denmark held their own and didn't get completely dominated. They were still getting outplayed through out the match but Holland simply forgot their shooting boots. They missed chances through out the game with Van Perisie missing several good looks and Robben playing selfish. Holland seemed out of sink through out the game with no movement or chemistry. It was just getting the ball and trying to create something through out the first half. They were eventually punished when Johnny Heitinga lost Michael Krohn-Dehil and he paid the price. It was a nice move which led to a weak left foot shot that went through Stekelenburg's legs. It was a goal that Holland would love to have back because it could have been so avoidable. Holland eventually started to get their chemistry back after Arjen Robben missed a good chance after a botch by Denmark's goalie Andersen. The ball movement was starting to click but the final touch was a let down especially for Van Perisie who had a sure goal if it was a better first touch. Instead it was saved and Denmark went to the half with the shocking lead. It was more of the same for Holland with Van Perisie missing another chance by completely whiffing the ball. It was a pitiful performance by Van Perisie who seemed burnt out after carrying Arsenal the entire season. Stephen Andersen made some decent saves including the biggest one on a breakaway with Huntelaar. Wesley Snejider was the best performer for Holland and he let out a perfect chipped pass to Huntelaar who simply couldn't finish. Kjaer and Agger were terrific in the back for the most part though especially at the end when Holland couldn't get any clear chances. They held the defense together and got the shocking upset. Denmark got away with a handball in the box though and has to be fortunate that it didn't get called. Either way Holland couldn't convert chances that seemed like routine goals. Even with the improved ball movement, they never fully got into a groove and now find themselves in a big hole. Daniel Agger wins man of the match for me because of his leadership and having to defend Robben at times. Agger was fantastic in the back and really set the tone that Denmark wouldn't be push overs.

Germany 1 Portugal 0- One of the main games that people were looking forward to in group stage. The game may have produced only one goal but it was full of excitement and competitiveness. Germany clearly looked better most of the first half but they couldn't get off many good shots. They were scuffing shots consecutive times with Muller and Podolski blasting good chances out of play. It wasn't the usual Germany performance where they take control with so many chances. Instead Portugal hung tight and nearly took the lead after Pepe hit the crossbar right before half time. It was a warning call by Portugal but it seemed like Germany was in full control and more threatening to score. Ronaldo was being corned by the German defense and was struggling to even get the ball. He had some moments but it wasn't like a typical Ronaldo game. Portugal failed to get a consistent flow offensively and relied on the counter attack. It's not a bad idea but thats where Germans take advantage of the game. They get possession for the majority of the game and they'll eventually score. Podolski and Muller had horrible games and couldn't be the hero for Germany. Eventually Sami Khedira put it a cross that was deflected but it was right there for Gomez to head in for the crucial goal. Pepe lost his marker and Gomez made him pay for his first goal in a major tournament. It was a big moment for his confidence and Germany going forward. The goal seemed to energize Portugal though and they finally started to push the ball down Germany's throats. Neuer was finally getting tested by Portugal which led to palming some crosses out but it was the German defense making last ditch tackles. Holger Badstuber made some critical stops from long distance shots by Portugal which were turned into corners. In the end, Portugal missed their best chance of the game with Ronaldo's ball evading everyone which was picked up by substitute Varela but his shot was denied by a great reaction save by Neuer. It wasn't a pretty performance by Germany and I was shocked to only see one goal but any win in the group of death you have to take with positivity. The man of the match for me was Mesut Ozil which is a bit of a surprise but his passing and movement was solid through out the game. If it wasn't for Portugal's eight men in the back tactics, we would have seen more Ozil excellence with some assists. He ran the midfield until the final half where Portugal's defense stepped up. His control and vision played a major role in Germany's slim victory.

Spain 1 Italy 1- I only saw the second half due to driving to the bar for the Croatia game. I wish I got to see all of it because the highlights showed that this game was an all around chess match. It was great to see Italy playing right up to par with Spain after people were doubting how they would last in this game. I wasn't a fan of Spain's tactics on playing with zero forwards because you need that striker to give you that lift when it comes to crossing in the box. They were trying to be Barcelona with through balls and smooth passing but in the end, it only came to one goal. The game had some major flops early in the second half which always hurts the game but after Mario Balotelli was subbed off, the game got interesting. It was funny to see the two bad boys play striker in Cassano and Balotelli even though it didn't muster to anything. They forced Casillas into some saves and they kept Spain's back four on their toes. Spain's defense looked a bit fragile without Carlos Puyol in the back and seemed to allow a bit more space than usual. Despite having the best midfield in the world, Spain seemed to lose its power with players like Marchiso and De Rossi winning possession consistently thwarting Spain's attacks. Eventually someone scored and it was shockingly Italy which got a nice clap from the Croatians at the bar. Andrea Pirlo put in a vintage through ball that I've seen time and time again from the Italian legend which got into Antonio Di Natalie who finally scored in a big tournament. It was a beautiful goal but it lasted for a grand total of three minutes and Spain's goal had even better passing. Iniesta looked great for most of the game with his runs and pace giving Italy a ton of problems. It finally resulted in something with a pass to David Silva then a nice back heel which got to Fabregas and easily put it in. It seemed so easy and it made me wonder why Spain couldn't do this some more. They eventually brought on Fernando Torres to give them a weapon at striker and they'll probably regret that decision. Spain started to take over the last twenty mints in possession and gave Torres some great chances. Instead he failed at dribbling past Buffon and he blew a chip with Buffon out of net over the bar. It summed up Torres season with all the misses and failed opportunities. The game ended 1-1 like I predicted and it was a great result for Italy. They were outplayed by a slim margin but they were right there against the likes of Xavi, Iniesta, and David Silva who all have good games. Its tough to pick a man of the match especially with both goalies making strong saves through out the game but I'm going to pick Iniesta. He seemed to be playing a striker role which isn't his role but he still gave Italy's defense massive problems. He was unlucky not to score after a finger tip save on Buffon. This was another great close game that kept me on the edge of my seat.

Croatia 3 Ireland 1- It was finally time to see my boys play in a major tournament since 2008. I was really excited and it felt like it was going to be a great performance. Croatia wasted no time with a goal from Mario Mandzukic which was a strange header. You really see headers go in from that far out of the box yet he slipped in thanks to a deflection on Darijo Srna cross. Croatia seemed to be in control but Ireland's effort was getting them some good looks. Eventually after Aiden McGeady drew a foul, Ireland's set piece excellence got them on level with a goal from Sean.St Ledger. It was a well placed free kick but it should have been cleared by Vedran Corluka but he was beat to the spot. It turned into a game after that and it seemed like Ireland was going to be right with Croatia but that ended in a few minutes. Croatia really started to play their style of game with passing all across the pitch and finding players floating around. Ivan Perisic and Ivan Rakitic were causing problems all games with their movement on the ball. What impressed was how they would track back and win balls off tackles which showed that Croatia didn't have a lack of energy. Perisic started to take some shots from outside the box and it threatened Ireland including one save that Given had to keep down which was tricky. It was only a matter of time before Croatia would score and it was right before half after a terrible clear out by Stephen Ward. It landed to in form striker Nikica Jelavic and he slipped it in beautifully. It was the usual goal we've seen him score on Everton several times if you've been following the Premiership. Ireland looked defeated and they couldn't create any chances without setting up set pieces but they couldn't even get around the box of Croatia after that goal. The second half started and Croatia immediately got after it with a second goal from Mario Mandzukic. It was a great play all around with every attacker getting a touch on the ball with Perisic finishing it off with a great cross to Mandzukic who headed it off the post but Shay Given was unlucky to have it hit off his head. It was a tough game for Given who is usually making top saves all around. The game seemed doomed for Ireland after that even with bringing on three strikers. They simply couldn't create without forcing set pieces and never really looked like scoring until the end with Keith Andrews nearly scoring on a header. The Irish attack looked lackadaisical with not much movement and long balls that were going nowhere. Croatia played with full of energy and showed lot of technique with the ball that they always had the potential to show but never put it together through out qualifiers. This was a terrific game to watch as a fan and I couldn't be more happier with the performance. The man of the match had to be Luka Modric because he was right there starting attacks and running the midfield. Nobody seemed to contain him for Ireland and it showed how he bossed the midfield for the entire game. You wouldn't expect anything less from a player of his quality.

France 1 England 1- Another classic chess match with two excellent teams. The game got boring at times but I still managed to find myself enjoying it. England looked more threatening early on with the shock start of Alex Oxlade Chamberlain on the left wing. He made some nice moves early on but he faded away in the second half for the eighteen year old star. England had the first real chance with James Milner getting through on a great ball from Welbeck but he missed the target horribly. He got past Lloris on a nice move but his left foot let him down. It was a poor finish but it showed that England could create even without star striker Wayne Rooney. France couldn't test Hart much early despite great moves down the wings especially from Ribery. It was a stale mate early on before a weak foul by Patrice Evra that I wouldn't have called changed the game. A great ball in by Stephen Gerrard found in Joleon Lescott for the huge England goal. It was shocking to see them up but it was well deserved after Lescott used his size to get ahead of Alou Diarra. The lead only lasted nine minutes with France starting to find their niche passing which led to a great blast by Samir Nasri for the equalizer. England looked slow to stop France's passing on edge of the box which led to the strike on the edge of the box. France seemed to get momentum and started testing Hart with Karim Benzema getting into the act. It amazed me how much force gets off of Benzema's shots even when he's on a tough angle. He didn't force Hart to make any outstanding saves but it got Hart moving and it was crazy to see how much power he can get. His control and dribbling was also a problem for England it looked like he wasn't missing a beat. Eventually the game wore on and England started forming a wall in front of goal. They were bringing everyone back to defend and started deflecting everything that France tried to put in the box. Scott Parker took at least three shots to the body in the game and really put in a defensive midfield's work out there. The game got eventually boring with France looked like the only team that was willing to attack. Welbeck was playing outstanding in the first half but eventually started to wear down without any service in attack. In the end, nobody cracked the dead lock even though France looked lethal on the ball with Ribery looking sharp and created chances. In the end, England was clearing out everything with Terry and Lescott commanding the defense and not let anything through in the box. Many players stepped up for both teams but both right backs really showed some great skill on the ball and defensively. I never heard of Mathieu Debuchy but it seemed like France didn't miss a beat without Barcy Sagna injured. His dribbling and crosses really opened up some eyes and you would have to expect he'll get a few assists against weaker opponents in next few games. He comes close in winning man of the match but I'm going to pick Glen Johnson. Nasri is another one that came close but it seemed like he started to fade away towards the end. Johnson was running rampant down the right all game and defended relatively well against Ribery. He silenced critics yesterday that he wasn't the right choice at right back with a top notch performance.

Ukraine 2 Sweden 1- I haven't seen much of this game so I can't really judge. The highlights were also too short so I don't have much input. It was great to see both great strikers get a goal but it was the older one in Shevchenko who managed to score the brace. It was neat finishing especially on the second goal which somehow squeezed into the near post. Sweden has to be let down that they couldn't beat the weakest team and now faces an uphill battle going forward. My review is short of this game with footytube letting me down with no twenty minute highlights. Thats where I usually go when I miss games but they only have videos of the goals. Ukraine is shockingly in first place with a pretty impressive performance against a Sweden team that was considered a dark horse to make a run. Shevchenko would have to be man of the match although the midfield had to be credited providing both goals so possibly Yarmolenko or Gusev who played a major role in the assists could be credited.

Updated predictions for the next 8.

Czech Republic vs Greece- This may be the worst game of the tournament with two very dull teams. I'm probably going to only watch the highlights so hopefully footytube gets back on their grind and provides highlights .This will be tough to watch with two teams that struggle to attack. The strange thing is the Czechs can't apparently defend either so possibly Greece can open up. I'm not sure where this game is headed because I expect the Czechs to play far better than they did on Friday. They could force a tie but I'm sticking with my early prediction of Greece winning 1-0.

Russia vs Poland- This might get ugly especially with Szczensy being suspended from this one. Russia's attack looks very much in form and Poland's defense showed cracks in the second half against Greece. It may get ugly but I think the co-hosts will muster up some offense. It could become end to end play but eventually Russia overall skill will overmatch Poland. I'm sticking with my 3-1 prediction of Russia from before the tournament.

Denmark vs Portugal- Portugal is in must win mode right now playing against the weakest team of the tournament who is tied for first in the group right now. They have played each other once a year since Euro 2008 and they'll make it five years in a row playing each other once a year. The rivalry has been dominated by Denmark with a few wins and not losing to Portugal yet. I'm pretty impressed by Portugal's overall play against Germany and I think they'll pull this out here. With a player of Ronaldo's caliber, I can't see Portugal missing chances that badly like Holland. Nani and Miereles should open up play as well even though this still will be close. Denmark will do their best to double team Ronaldo and frustrate him into making poor decisions. I'm going to stick with my 2-1 prediction of Portugal but it wouldn't surprise me if Portugal won 2-0.

Holland vs Germany- It was supposed to be the best game of group stage but it has turned into Holland's possible exit from the tournament. They are in serious trouble and they don't possess the quality defense like Portugal. They are going to need their attackers to score against a well organized German team. It's going to be difficult and I think they'll fall short which led to likely elimination from group stage. They don't seem organized in the back as they were lucky Denmark didn't take advantage late in the game. I know they created chances but the Germans are very organized and I think their due for a break out game. I'm changing my original prediction of 2-2 to now a 2-1 win for Germany which breaks my heart because Holland is a team that I really enjoy watching.

Italy vs Croatia- A major showdown on Thursday and I can't deny that this game has me buzzed. A Croatia win gets them into the quarterfinals while Italy really needs a win for a great chance at the next round. I know Croatia has to play Spain next so a draw wouldn't be a bad result for Italy but Italy will be disappointed if they can't get three points after a great performance against Spain. This game will be free flowing and goals will be scored with both teams having averaging defenses but great weapons. I'm leaning towards picking Italy because their defense really looked good against Spain. Then again Croatia's offense seems to be flowing and they play with two strikers that are very much in form. My original prediction was 2-2 and I'm staying with it but Italy winning 2-1 or 3-1 wouldn't surprise me. This will be a fantastic game.

Spain vs Ireland- Ireland wasn't expected to do much this tournament but I didn't expect them to look that overmatched against Croatia. They will be playing against an angry Spain team that will need to score goals especially if Croatia upsets Italy. I don't think this game will be much of a contest and I'm sticking with my prediction of Spain winning 3-0 although it could get much uglier.

France vs Ukraine- A very interesting contest now that Ukraine won. I'm not sure if I'm going to catch this live but I'm really looking forward to seeing if Ukraine is for real. My prediction will change because Ukraine deserves more praise for their win. They also showed that they can attack and not be completely overmatched. My original prediction was 3-0 France and that will be changed to 3-1 France win. France defense looks a bit shaky and I think a late consolation for Ukraine will happen. I'm expecting Benzema to score at least a brace.

England vs Sweden- England looked better than I expected while Sweden looked worse than I expected. England has to be pretty confident going into this one after holding a team like France to just one goal. The attack didn't look great but it had some great moments and Sweden's defense looks weak at the moment. I think Welbeck is due for a break out game because he showed some serious ability against France in spurts with his pace. This is the game where I know my prediction will have to change with no doubt in my mind. England wins 2-0 with commanding defense from the back four and Welbeck having a break out game. Also Stephen Gerrard will get his goal that he always gets in the tournament.

Best match of the Euros so far last night. Poland deserve so much credit for their desire and team spirit, they just seem to lack that final edge to finish teams off, but they have kept themselves in it which is the key thing. This group has turned out to be far more exciting than I expected.

Now tonight should be very interesting, both Portugal and Holland need results to keep their hopes alive. Germany surely can't play any worse than on saturday and with Holland needing a result it should spark them to play better too. Should be an excellent match. Would love to see Denmark get through.

Yeah, I agree.

Brilliant match, hope both teams get through now.

Blazscowski's goal was best of the Euros so far.

Eh, I rate Milner myself. I think he's an extremely handy player to have when we're playing a team of equal quality or better to us and we need someone to solidify the midfield and give protection to Johnson at right back. When we're playing teams of lesser quality like Sweden and Ukraine though i'd prefer to see Walcott in his place.
