Last year’s The World’s End is one big bittersweet farewell; it’s a movie about friends parting ways that also happens to serve as capstone to Edgar Wright’s accidental Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy, kicked off in 2004 with Shaun of the Dead and continued with 2007′s Hot Fuzz before drawing to a close in 2013. The film’s premiere marked the end of nearly a decade of collaboration between Wright and his frequent co conspirators, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, putting each on their own separate career paths.
But just because The World’s End wrapped up their genre mashing series doesn’t imply that the trio are done with one another; they’ve been knuckleheads since old times, boasting a working relationship (and genuine friendship) that goes all the way back to the late 90s with British TV show Spaced. You don’t simply bid adieu to that kind of camaraderie and cohesion. So even though the Three Flavours Cornetto films end with a goodbye, there was never a reason to assume that goodbye was permanent.
Driving that point home today is word from Pegg that he and Wright have up and put their heads together on a new potential project. How very timely. Pegg made mention of this development in an interview with BBC 6 Music (by way of Empire Online); naturally, he offered very little by way of specifics on what exactly the pair have in mind at the moment (there’s a title, but Pegg wisely kept it in reserve).
Odds are that if you’re a fan of Shaun of the Dead et al, however, you’re probably just jazzed at the idea of two thirds of the gang getting back together again. Or maybe three thirds. Pegg also made a point to reminisce about his fondness toward Wright, Frost, and the Three Flavours pictures, offering this interesting little quote:
“We made three films in ten years and hopefully in the next decade we’ll make another three. I really love working with those guys and I wouldn’t ever not want to work with them. It’s not even a question.â€
Of course, that should be taken quite lightly; while it’s true that these three make a habit of showing up in each other’s movies in gag cameos (see Frost’s Cuban Fury), we’re talking about a production that amounts to little more than an idea at present. (Unless Pegg is playing with his cards really close to the vest here.) Basically, until Frost is involved with the movie, he isn’t, so for right now it’s just Pegg and Wright at the drawing board making it happen. (Whatever “it†is.)
Anybody hoping to hear anything more about their lock and key film in the not too distant future would do well not to hold their breath, either; Pegg has a full slate between Hector and the Search for Happiness (which he’s currently doing PA rounds on), this year’s The Boxtrolls, Absolutely Anything and Man Up in 2015, and Mission Impossible 5. Meanwhile, walking away from Ant-Man hasn’t made Wright less busy – he’s lining up Baby Driver for his next feature, with Grasshopper Jungle on the docket as his next-next feature.
So get excited about these guys joining creative forces once again, but don’t expect updates on their efforts anytime soonish. Do feel free to speculate as to what Pegg and Wright have up their sleeve; a betting man would probably put them on some combination of genre movies, but maybe they’ll take everyone off guard by making a romantic period drama instead. (But probably not.)
