I looked it up on wikipedia and it is still listing Smith as the active doctor and that he isn't leaving. Not sure how reliable Wiki is though I guess we have to wait and see. They also talk about this other doctor and some Moffat statement on him, how he is supposed to be the doctors dark deeds manifested or something similar. If he takes up the mantle of the doctor, do you see the first season being some sort of redemption arc?

Have you watched last nights episode yet? The last scene states "introducing John Hurt as The Doctor". I then read up on it, and it looks like John Hurt would likely be the "true" Ninth Doctor. The incarnation that fought in the Time War and left behind the principles that all the other incarnations lived by. He abandoned the name Doctor and used his real name. Though, if they go through with that, this would have to be the last Doctor. Which makes me sad. But as I said, Doctor Who has the power to write their way out of the certainties.

This new Doctor will be dark, he will be the reason The Doctor has so many nicknames. I think so anyway, it's pretty complicated to follow, as is most of the new writers writings. Russel Davies would have written this so much better.

Also:

"The current theories range from the idea that John Hurt is playing the man who became the First Doctor. That is he is the man who did something that caused The Doctor to make the promise that he not only stole the TARDIS, but took the name The Doctor.

Another theory is that Hurt is playing the true Ninth Doctor and that Smith is the Twelfth and not the Eleventh. This is certainly a possibility given what we know about The Doctor, but it does create the problem with the fact that the next regeneration would be The Doctor’s last…unless, of course, it turns out that River giving up all of her regenerations extended the life of The Doctor well beyond the norm for a Time Lord""

I need to sit down and watch it (most likely tonight) since I hadn't the time last night. This is interesting. Did they write Matt's character off in anyway (don't worry about spoilers they don't bother me) like an on screen death or will they start the next season with that?

No on screen death. John Hurt was turned around with his back turned so we couldn't see his face, and Claudia wanted to know who he was as she had seen the previous 10 Doctors in some form in that scene. The Doctor was like no, don't look at him or talk to him, he is the guy that abandoned what I live for (peace, etc) and abandoned The Doctor. John Hurt isn't known as The Doctor, he ditched the name, he ditched the principles. Then Matt Smith and Claudia walked off (this scene happened in a place I cannot explain, you'll need to watch it) and then John Hurt turned around and showed his face, and then it said "Introducing John Hurt as The Doctor".

Okay. so that means that currently/until further notice we have 2 doctors running around. That could make for an interesting dynamic. With Smith being the typical pacifistic doctor and Hurt's character being a much darker persona. Seeing two time lords clash without it being the doctor vs the master. I guess Hurt will be in the 50th anniversary show as well then, that means we will have 3 doctors in one special.

Because The Doctor Who facebook has been releasing teaser pics for the 50th anniversary for a while.

he's involved in some form. As is Tennant.

The Zygons, Daleks, and Cybermen, amongst other aliens, will feature in some way and the Tenth Doctor and Rose will return, alongside the Eleventh Doctor and Clara.[15][14] Also featuring is John Hurt following on from his brief appearance in previous story "The Name of the Doctor". Matt Smith also hinted that "paintings" will be involved in some way, during a TV interview
with Jonathan Ross.[16]

That means we will have 3 doctors interacting at the same time. I don't think we've had that since that special with the first 3 doctors or something. It will make for a very interesting dynamic.

Maybe. Still not sure how much Hurt will be involved with those two. I'm so glad these two seemingly interact a lot though; both of which are my 1 and 2 in terms of best Doctors (Tennant being one). Matt Smith would have thrived so much under Russel's writing.

I think it will be something along the lines of Tennant and Smith interacting a lot and then we get cut aways to Hurt doing his own thing. then some kind of grand encounter between the three at some point. Unless Smith dies in the anniversary special that is also how I see the next season being built. With intertwining stories between Matt and John with them being forced to work together at times. The idea of two vastly different ideologies who still want the same thing clashing.

Just watched it and the first thing that struck me was how good is Smith as an emotional actor? Especially when he was in his time stream and was convincing Clara to let him save her, he's been wasted through this series on the whole by being so limited in his range. Anyway I see Hurt and Smith interacting more personally, they'll be the ying to the other's yang. It's obvious Hurt did something Smith found going against the morality of the Dr's name which I'm curious to find out (could it link into the time war somehow?) Also I loved how they showed Clara interacting with previous Doctors going back to the original one (Hartnell was it? To wiki I go. Yeah it was) and each's signature clothing (Ecclestones leather jacket brushing past her in the Timestream as an example) and their voices being heard, it really sold her always being there so well.
