People are different. Some are brave enough to face those homophobic people, and some are nurtured in an environment where being gay simply isn't a big deal any more. Addressing Shadow's point on people choosing whether to be gay, I kinda' disagree. Your point on people "turning if they meet the right person" is valid, but I believe they always had it in them to turn, meaning it wasn't their choice that they're attracted to that gender. I don't believe everyone is born gay, though I think some people are, I believe you do not have a choice who you're attracted to. Whether that's born attracted to men, or later in life turning straight to gay, I don't believe you can choose what you're attracted to.
Some people talk themselves out of it and continue to pretend to be straight to try and shift those inner-feelings, but you'll find most of them give up and eventually come out.
