Despite four-fight octagon skid, Charlie Brenneman to receive another UFC bout

Charlie Brenneman has earned just one victory in his past six UFC appearances. And even though he has been stopped by knockout or submission in all of those losses, he’ll still be granted at least one more opportunity to showcase his skills inside the octagon.

Brenneman (19-7 MMA, 4-6 UFC) was last seen in action at UFC 172, where he suffered a horrific knockout loss at the hands of Danny Castillo. The highlight-reel finish brought “The Spaniard†to an underwhelming 0-2 since being recalled to the UFC roster in January.

Most fighters would be axed from the organization for such results, but according to Brenneman’s manager Mike Constantino, the lightweight fighter has not been released from his UFC contract and expects a fight offer before the year is out.

“Charlie’s going to get another chance,†Constantino told MMAjunkie. “Charlie will be back and will get another chance. We’re looking at the fall for him.â€

Brenneman’s road in the UFC has been rocky to say the least. He was initially signed to the organization at welterweight, where he put together a 4-4 record.

The highlight of his time at 170 pounds was a victory over Rick Story in a fight Brenneman accepted on roughly 24 hours notice. The flipside of his stint saw him suffering crushing knockouts at the hands of Johny Hendricks, Anthony Johnson and Kyle Noke.

His loss to Noke resulted in a release from the UFC, something that sparked Brenneman to drop down to lightweight to try to rebuild his career in a new weight class.

That attempt succeeded – at least outside of the UFC – in the form of four straight victories. But once he was called back to fight Beneil Dariush at UFC Fight Night 35, the losses began to stack up again.

Brenneman was arguably getting the better of Castillo prior to being caught by the fight-ending blow. But he’ll likely need a win his next time out if he’s going to keep his spot in perhaps the UFC’s most crowded division.

Man, how'd he get back in the first place? He puts on bathroom break performances.

He dropped to 155 and was undefeated, so he got another shot at lightweight... which has not paid off so far. Dude will always have some respect from me though for taking Rick Story on on 1 day notice and beating him.

I don't really have that much respect for him, I mean all he did was take Story down and try to sit on him the whole time.

If he did a little bit more of a number I would have thought so, but I hate it when fighters are so one dimensional like that.

He fought him on a day's notice and did what he needed to win. No one was giving him a shot and honestly that was the game plan he needed to win and a game plan Story wasn't ready for a didn't see coming. It's been a while since I saw the fight but I remember him being relatively active on the ground.

Still, I hate it when that's all the gameplan is. It's gives people an excuse to go to the bathroom when that's what intermissions are for.

To be fair if you go to the bathroom during an intermission you'll be standing in line the whole intermission and then some anyway

For a UFC event, I know local events around here that are somewhat crowded... what the fuck?

My point is, he's a boring fighter. Regardless of if he took the fight on a one day's notice, I'm not impressed because all he did was sit on Story the whole fight. He should have stayed cut, I'm no big fan of his.

But who else has down that to Rick Story? Not a lot of people. He was always the one going after people, taking them down and overpowering them and Brenneman used his own game against him and that's impressive in and of itself. I mean, Story is a guy who outwrestled and beat Johny Hendricks.

And his record's been what since then? 4-5?

A win over Rick Story at least at this point isn't even entirely impressive to begin with considering Story got juiced by Maia (who's probably the only top 10 he's fought besides Hendricks and Ellenberger way back in the day) and the fact that he pretty much took him down and tried to hump him the whole fight doesn't add much significance n the first place.

The fact that he's been sucking balls at 155 isn't helping either.
