Demian Maia vs. Jake Shields Expected to Headline UFC Fight Night 29 in Brazil

A highly anticipated welterweight bout between Demian Maia and Jake Shields now has a home.

The fight is reportedly set to headline UFC Fight Night 29 on Oct. 9 in Brazil, according to a report from MMAFighting.com. The venue is targeted to be the Jose Correa Gymnasium in Barueri, São Paulo, according to Combate.com.


Maia was supposed to be fighting on the recent UFC 163: Aldo vs. Korean Zombie fight card in Rio de Janeiro, but had the fight yanked out from under him when Josh Koscheck withdrew due to injury.


Following a roller coaster ride during his last couple of years at middleweight, Maia (18-4) dropped to welterweight last year and hasn’t looked back. He is currently 3-0 at 170 pounds, racking up victories over Dong Hyun Kim, Rick Story and Jon Fitch.

Maia hasn’t fought since defeating Fitch at UFC 156 in February.


Shields (28-6-1, 1 NC) has also bounced around weight classes. He left Strikeforce as the promotion’s middleweight champion, but dropped to welterweight upon entering the Octagon.


He defeated Martin Kampmann in his UFC debut, but then lost back-to-back bouts to Georges St-Pierre and Jake Ellenberger.


Shields then jumped up to middleweight where he defeated Yoshiro Akiyama, but had a victory over Ed Herman turned to a no contest after Shields failed his post-fight drug test.


He returned to welterweight at UFC 161 in May, winning a split decision victory over Tyron Woodley.

Jake Shields hasn't really had a good performance since joining the UFC, so I'll be going with Maia on this one. Erik Silva vs. Dong Hyun Kim has been slated as the Co-Mainevent of this show as well.

Not going to sugarcoat this, matchup looks like complete dogshit.

I see these two on paper doing nothing but hugging on the fence for three or five rounds however long this fight will be. Both can't strike for shit, neither are going to be all that dominant on the ground, Like the boring Fitch/Maia fight where nothing was done except for Maia looking like a backpack.

Erick Silva and Stun Gun doesn't interest me either.

Pretty poor matchmaking here. Maia is getting enough wins to look like a contender, putting him in the cage with a high level grappler thats good enough to basically negate any chance of a Maia submission but hasn't had an exciting fight in years is terrible. Not to mention Maia's tendancy to just grapplefuck. These two should just be given strikers, that way its someone they can either dominate and potentially finish or they get knocked out.

I still don't know why Shields just won't stay at middleweight. He hasn't been much of anything at welterweight.

But I'm interested in this fight cause they are submission specialists. That's bout it. Hoping for a sub here. But I'm just kinda not feeling it cause Shields hasn't done much of anything since he came to UFC. I'm just waiting for him to really do something.

This isn't main event caliber. I don't care how much they want to hype out Maia, he shouldn't be main eventing. I'd rather see Big Nog face Struve or even Wandy face Kennedy. Those are much more appealing matchups. Once again, UFC has over saturated the Fight Nights.
