Demian Maia is a former No. 1 contender at middleweight, having gone five rounds with UFC 185-pound champion Anderson Silva back in 2010. Now, despite going 3-1 in his last four bouts, Maia is considering a drop to the welterweight division.

"They (the UFC) asked me if I would drop to 77kg. Yes, sometimes I think on this possibility. Maybe, let's see," wrote Maia on his Twitter account.

Maia has been thinking about making the move himself since early in August after he defeated Mario Miranda via decision at UFC 118. He followed that up with a win over Kendall Grove before falling to Mark Munoz at UFC 131. Maia stopped Jorge Santiago this past October.
The Brazilian, who fights out of the Wand Fight Team, has competed in the UFC since 2007. He owns wins over Chael Sonnen, Dan Miller, Ed Herman and Jason MacDonald during his stint inside the Octagon

Not sure why he would consider it since he is doing well at that weight class. Yes he probably can't beat the champion but GSP at welterweight isn't any easier. In the end I don't think he will make the move.

GSP is the dominant force in the Welterweight decision so it would be a terrible decision on his behalf to move. I think he will stay where he is though, it would be the smarter choice.
