Daniel Cormier to Roy Nelson: Re-sign with UFC, so we can settle our differences

Daniel Cormier wants Roy Nelson to stick around the UFC just a little longer.

Cormier told MMAFighting.com on Thursday that he wants to fight Nelson at UFC 166 on Oct. 19 in Houston in what will be his last fight at heavyweight.

"Roy and I still have some unfinished business," Cormier said. "I hope he re-signs with the UFC, so we can settle what he started two months ago.

"I want to find a way to give him a pass for his performance against Stipe [Miocic at UFC 115] since he took that fight on such short notice. In my eyes, that loss didn't do much to diminish his place in the UFC heavyweight division."

Nelson did not immediately respond to a request for a comment.

Cormier took exception to the fact that Nelson claimed he turned down a fight against him at UFC 161, when Cormier says he was never medically cleared to fight Nelson on short notice in Winnipeg on June 15.

After Nelson insinuated Cormier turned the fight down, Cormier told FUEL TV's "UFC Tonight" that he wanted to, "Kick his ass for Dana White," who Nelson has publicly feuded with in the past. At the UFC 115 media day, Nelson replied, "Having a lot of black friends, they would say that would be more of an Uncle Tom move."

Nelson went on to lose to Miocic via unanimous decision, and thus entered free agency. According to sources close to the situation, the UFC is still working on re-signing "Big Country" and are interested in matching up the heavyweights.

Nelson (19-8) had won three fights in a row prior to his loss to Miocic last month, while Cormier (12-0) won his UFC debut against Frank Mir in April. He plans on making a run at the light heavyweight title following his last fight at heavyweight.

UFC 166, headlined by Cain Velasquez vs. Junior dos Santos 3, will be held at the Toyota Center.

If it does happen hopefully Cormier attempts to put on a better showing than he did in the snoozefest with Mir.

Blame Mir for letting Cormier hug the shit out of him.

Doubt some prodding from a fighter is going to bring back Big Country, say you can guarantee him six figures for the fight and he'll be down.

Surely Nelson will re-sign with UFC, where else will he go that can pay him a similar wage? Pretty good return fight if he gets Cormier, would be the underdog but with his striking anything can happen. Plus against someone like Cormier he would most likely be maineventing or co-maineventing a PPV so it should be a good payday.

That fight would be pretty good. Action packed. Not like the Mir fight since Big Country would look to bring the fight to him and throw.

I'd definitely like this fight if it were to happen.

I like this fight for one reason; when Cormier wins it doesn't mean anything. The rumour of Werdum v Cormier was bad because if Cormier wins then he would have knocked off a top contender in a division he's no longer in. Give him Roy and it doesn't change anything, Nelsons never getting a Title shot. Roy needs to stop thinking he's worth the big bucks when he's just a HW gatekeeper.

Yeah I had high hopes for Big Country but he just isn't quick enough. He's definitely durable but he is too slow to be an elite fighter. Plus he doesn't use his grappling and jiu jitsu skills. I mean the guy is a grappling champion yet all he does is stand and swing. His time has passed on going higher but he could still make good interesting fights for fans to watch.

The allure of just standing and banging is too strong for some, If Roy did use his grappling more he'd be better off, just standing with guys twice as fast as him isn't smart, he'll just get outpointed everytime he meets a good striker.
