WWE announced this afternoon that WWE World Heavyweight champion Daniel Bryan has successfully underwent neck surgery earlier today in Pittsburgh, PA.
A WWE news update referred to the issue as a "lingering" nerve issue with his neck and that Bryan underwent a cervical foraminotomy in order to decompress the nerve root. During that procedure, surgeons go in through the back of the neck and shave the inside edges of joints in the neck and spine that are causing compression in order to prevent the eventual collapse of a spinal disc.
Bryan is already out of bed and wearing a soft neck brace. He is expected to be released from the hospital in 1-2 days.
WWE noted there is no timetable yet for Bryan's return but the usual recovery from such a procedure for heavy physical activity is 2-3 months.
Prior to the surgery, WWE sources noted to PWInsider.com that they expected Bryan out for about two months and that Summerslam was a likely return.
WWE announced they would officially explain what the status of the WWE World Heavyweight championship is during this Monday's Raw, which will be taped in London, Great Britain.

So it wasn't one particular cause, just some preventative stuff? That's great, and even better that it went well. Recover quickly buddy.

Wonder if part of it was him rewatching that angle with Kane last week and saying "Ya know... I have this issue going on with my neck, and I have to get it fixed. Peace, y'all".

Wonder if they'll keep the title on him now that he'll be out for 2 months? Honestly wouldn't mind them taking it away.

There was a nerve being pinched or something if I understand it right. But not a real broken neck.

And this is the kind of situation where it's a degenerative problem that takes a while to really affect the average person. In fact, if most of us had it, we might never feel any effect from it outside of a stiff neck or a headache in the lower rear of our skull on occasion. Chances are, if it were one of us, we'd never have to have surgery.

However, what often happens in sports/sports entertainment is that a person has one jarring event that makes the injury's effect obvious and clear and surgery is required. It wasn't really preventative, but it's an unusual type of operation to most of us, simply because the majority of the population is never going to have it.

It's good that it was so simple (they wouldn't have known for sure until they got in there and saw how degenerated things were), because more degenerated disks, joints, etc., would have made it a much more onerous recovery process that likely would have taken 6 - 12 months, rather than 2 or 3.

Glad to hear that everything went well. Get well soon, champ!

So, this upcoming Monday night on Raw, there'll be an explanation of what the state is of the WWE-WHC. Hopefully DBry won't be stripped of the title(s). If they're gonna strip him, at least have somebody fight for it... Or they could just hand it over to HHH (to get some heat going, 'cause RAW's been shite these past couple of weeks, WWE-WHC related). Yeah, I'd rather see it handed over to HHH than to Kane.

MITB is less than 2 months away I would hope they don't let him keep it; not saying I don't feel bad for the guy, I'm just saying business is business. He will have plenty more time to make another run in his career.

Also why not give him the full 3 months off; who cares if he's feeling better he's an asset and being 33ish I believe that gives them plenty of time to do something with him in the long run. Just let him fully recuperate and not worry about the straps by vacating them and then when he comes back we know what's coming.

This is shitty to say but I think this could have good potential for the WWE; it's been a constant Yes! movement fest for awhile now; it wouldn't be a bad thing to let it cool down and then see if it will start back up when he returns ( One way to feel out if the Yes! Movement is something that stays for the long term or was just a fad that could easily go away with some time off).

Best of luck in his recovery but I hope he/the company play it smart in this one and not rush him back too soon.
