The Dresden Dose: WAR Aug. 15th
"The week without Kane"
Good evening, my WrestlingSmarks public, Chris Dresden here once again with The Dresden Dose. It's been another busy week for me, so that's why I'm writing a Thursday article about a show that was posted this past Monday. So without further adieu, let's dive right into things, shall we? I'm excited.
We start things off with a Christian promo. Forgive me for not knowing this, but who plays Christian? I want to give you kudos because your portrayal is absolute gold. Btw, know who else beat Randy Orton? A certain Big Red Monster.
If I haven't already said so, I'd rather keep typing than go check, the banner for Monday Night War is well done in my opinion. As we are welcomed to the program and things officially get under way, we are joined by the Rated R Superstar!
In another strong promo, I mean a really strong promo, Edge brags about having Batista's number when it comes to in-ring competition and lays down a challenge for Starrcade. This brings out Tazz, who's making his first live appearance if I'm not mistaken. Tazz makes the rematch between Edge and Batista official but with an added bonus, he will be officiating the match and the winner will be the number one contender to the CWF Heavyweight Championship. Survive if he lets you, baby!
While it's never stated that Edge or Tazz leave the ring, I'm going to assume Edge leaves sometime over the course of Tazz speaking, and Tazz leaves while J.R. and Joey Styles discuss what was just announced. I give you guys props on getting better with the segues, but it still requires some work.
Man, the difference in the entrances is almost startling. I mean, Miz just saunters out and goes to the ring, no flash or flair whatsoever. Morrison on the other hand has pictures and a few segments of text. If you didn't read the trash talking and went by presentation alone, Morrison comes off as the favorite to win.
And, wouldn't you know it, Morrison ends up winning it. I will say it was a good match though, kudos to whoever wrote it, I haven't gotten to the end credits yet obviously.
At first I was confused as to why there was a match banner in the commercial slot, but once I read what it said, the placement made more sense and no longer appeared to be an error. By the way, quite a creative faction, I'm looking forward to the return of The Hoov. However, in a bit of nitpicking, you shouldn't advertise that the cameras are, "going backstage" if you're going to commercial.
Back from commercial, we are treated to a John Cena promo, who is making his return to the brand judging by his opening statement. Cena basically puts the locker room on notice and is unexpectedly attacked by Miz. I appreciate what's being done here, but Cena/Miz? Christian/Orton? Feels a lot like copying the actual product. Not saying you are, but it's raising an eyebrow or two. Oh yeah, they're facing off at Starrcade.
Alright so as the commentators tell us, Cena is on his own. I think he was in a tag team with Triple H if my memory's serving me correctly. Also, Shawn Michaels is no longer tagging with Bret Hart and he and Triple H are DX. Can we stop switching every single solitary week please?
We have a proper segue as Todd Grisham is seen standing by backstage. He is joined by none other than Muhammad Hassan. This should be good. I won't give a synopsis like I have with the others, I'll just pose a question. Is there anyone rawisrey can't play? His trio will certainly continue to be a force to be reckoned with.
Anyhoo, we immediately cut to the match, which is taking a step backward in the transition department where the graphic is still for the team of Hart and Michaels, which begs the question, could they not have waited until next week? Oh well, it's easier to play an actual tag team. Plus with the Attitude Era around, DX is right at home. Perhaps not so much this incarnation, but it's a fit nonetheless.
In a great match, the team of Daivari and The Great Khali pick up the victory. Post-match, we get a properly done segue to commercial, where Megan Fox is pulling double fed duty. Back from commercial, I see static, which made me think Punk was on his way out but instead, in a surprising event, it's the Wolfpac, comprised of Hogan, Nash, and Scott Steiner.
Hogan's not too bad, but his promo starts off oddly, as nothing is there to really provoke him to point out his boast. Then when the mic is handed off to Steiner, he too seems to randomly outburst. Granted that's true to the real Scott, it would've made more sense if you put something about the crowd booing in between Hogan handing off the microphone and Steiner actually talking.
That aside, your Steiner is actually on par I'll say, whoever plays the Wolfpac. Since these are all new signings and I haven't been on CWF.com lately, I don't know who is who, please forgive me for that. Anyhoo the microphone goes to Big Kev momentarily until they're interrupted.
It's Stone Cold Steve Austin, who runs them down and exchanges words with Hogan, leading to Austin bringing out his boys The Rock and Mick Foley. Before they can fight, Tazz appears on the titantron. Starrcade will see The Attitude Era versus The Wolfpac and next week on WAR we'll see Austin vs. Hogan! Gotta say, isn't the booking a bit backwards there? If Starrcade's the biggest PPV ever, Austin/Hogan should be at Starrcade and have the six-man next week. Oh well, maybe we'll see Austin/Hogan at the next pay-per-view.
We cut to the backstage and Jericho has returned as we get a promo from him. He, according to Tazz, will be in action at Starrcade against Brock Lesnar. We now go to the commentators who run down the card.
Finlay vs. Punk for the CWF World Heavyweight Championship. Will Finlay be successful in his first defense or will the "Voice of the Voiceless" snatch the gold from the Irishman? Will the Money in the Bank briefcase holder get involved? Who knows?
Christian vs. Orton in a 30 minute No Holds Barred Iron Man match. Very gimmicky, but just gimmicky enough to work. The No Holds Barred rule compliments the Iron Man stipulation as well as the time limit. Will Christian continue to have the best of Orton, or will Randy silence the golden-haired chick magnet?
Batista vs. Edge, even though it says Orton, in a number one contender's match for the CWF Heavyweight Championship with Tazz as the special referee. When these two collide, will it be The Animal or The Rated R Superstar that goes on to do battle for the belt?
John Cena vs. The Miz. After what happened tonight, will the Awesome One go on to do the same at the pay-per-view, or will the former Doctor of Thuganomics prove why he's more dangerous as a singles competitor?
Kane vs. Hassan. I'm fine with this but there is no rhyme or reason for it. I haven't crossed paths with any of the members of Rey's faction. Oh well, let's tear it up man!
After the pay-per-view is thoroughly hyped, it is time for Muhammad Hassan to take on CM Punk as both men make their way to the ring. The two find themselves embroiled in a stellar match when suddenly, Finlay interrupts. And with that, Hassan takes advantage of the distraction and wins the match.
And post-match, Kane shows up to kick some ass. Sweet. I must say though, for my own sake, that I did not write that promo. And the grammatically correct way to say it would be, ahem:
Kane: Destruction is a path, but in order to destroy, your mind must be enabled to destroy. And at Starrcade, you will feel the wrath...
Anyhoo, glad Kane made an appearance on the show, was worried there'd be no hellfire and brimstone on this week's WAR. We go to commercial which is promoting next Sunday's pay-per-view, that you all should read because they have thus far failed to disappoint.
Back from commercial, Christian and Orton meet for the contract signing for their aforementioned match. After a heated back-and-forth, the ink gets put to the paper and Christian gets put through the table courtesy of an RKO.
But the show's not over yet folks! Second time I've been wrong, I thought the Kane stuff was the ending, then I thought the RKO was. And Christian pretty much no sells the RKO and leaves the ring by his own power.
We cut backstage to a Finlay promo, which is also well done. We've got some strong promo guys on our roster. After this, we cut to an ominously beginning segment that reveals CWF's signing of the tag team of Alberto Del Rio and Drew McIntyre. Certainly an interesting tandem.
We go to commercial, which is for Denny's. Back from commercial, we have our next match, with half-done entrances as two are already in the ring and the other two get to come out. This match is apparently a Ladder match to crown a number one contender for the Primetime Championship via the capturing of a briefcase.
After a nice match and an indefinite conclusion, Starrcade will see John Morrison defend his Primetime Championship against Sheamus and Kevin Thorn in a Steel Cage, win by escape only. Also, Dolph Ziggler and Cody Rhodes will get another shot at contendership as they fight for it at Starrcade.
So Sheamus Brogue Kicks Thorn and cuts a promo, drops the microphone afterwards and leaves. Thorn no-sells the Kick and leaves to the back. After everyone leaves, BOOM, Lesnar time. Really? Abandoning the smooth transition again?
Lesnar comes out and delivers an awesome promo, putting the locker room on notice much like Cena did earlier in the show, except no one attacked Brock. We cut to commercial which is for the new Call of Duty. Don't play it so I don't care, but hope those that do buy it and have great fun with it.
Back from commercial, we're straight into Batista versus Orton. They wrestle a semi-short match, Edge tries to pull what Finlay did earlier but it doesn't work, Batista wins his match by submission. This was cool to see as I feel the Batista Bite and submissions in general are overlooked.
We cut backstage for a sweet Punk promo then return to the arena for our main event. This show has felt pay-per-view length, maybe it's because I'm tired. Anyway, Edge and Finlay come out. Do yourself a favor, check this match out. The CWF Champion wins the match and the show ends with Finlay standing tall.
Bronzy is Jericho, PegasusKid is Cena, Andrew is the Wolfpac. Very cool. Starrcade has eleven matches. Also cool. Let's hope we get a decent turnout for trash talking and we get some quality matches written, there's only a little over a week to do so.
Well folks, hope none of you took my criticisms harshly and you enjoyed reading this column. As always, this has been The Dresden Dose, I'll be back for next week's show!
P.S. Please show EoR some love and book him. He lost to Kane and hasn't been seen since.
