Dragon Gate USA Open the Untouchable Gate review

Wrestlers are seen backstage preparing for their respective matches

Kicking things off with a rematch from Open the historic gate as Masto Yoshino faces Dragon Kid. Fast exchange to start. These two have great chemistry together. Dragon kid hits two knee drops for two. More of a hard hitting slower style match than their last encounter. Yoshino folds Dragon kid up with a loud chop. Yoshino puts on an absolutely nasty single leg lion tamer. Dragon Kid is Rey Mysterio without the steroids and double the talent. Dragon Kid hits a leap over the top rope to the outside hurricanrana that looks insane. Dragon Kid connects with an absolutely nasty outside in diamond dust. Yoshino gets two after a wrap around sitout lariat (the move JTG does). Dragon Kid counters a suplex into an absolutely wicked stunner. Yoshino gets two after a hesitation missile dropkick. Dragon Kid connects with a legit top rope hurricanrana for a close two count. Dragon Kid hits the Ultra Hurricanrana for a very very close two count. This is awesome chant. Yoshino connects with the Lightning Spiral for two. Dragon Kid connects with a snap crucifix pin for the win. Overall this was a very hot opener. I would have rather seen Yoshino win this won since Dragon Kid took the first American encounter. Great counters in this one, crowd was very into it and the ending 3 or 4 minutes was just awesome.

Flashback to last week when Yamato kicked Quackenbush low and Akuma well he didn't really turn heel since he already is a heel but he basically joined Yamato's side. This leads us to...

Yamato and Gran Akuma vs. Jigsaw and Mike Quackenbush
Heels start the match on the outside. Yamato hits a spear on Jigsaw. Akuma and Yamato isolating Jigsaw. Jigsaw almost takes a vertical suplex on his feet. Yamato focusing on the leg of Jigsaw. Jigsaw favoring his leg even more than the usual selling of having your leg worked over. Jigsaw rolls up Yamato for a two count. Yamato locks in a weird sitdown texas cloverleaf/haas of pain hybrid submission. Jigsaw seems legit injured here. Jigsaw finally gets the tag to Quackenbush. Black Tornado Slam gets two for Quack. Jigsaw hits a superkick with his good leg for two. How Jigsaw is still wrestling is beyond me? Especially doing the moves he's doing. Quack hits a quackton bomb for two. Yamato spears Akuma. Quack hits the QD 2 for the win. This match was...odd. It wasn't the worst match I've ever seen but it definitely wasn't as good as was expected from these four. Not sure if it was a communication issue or what but the timing was definitely off in this one. Jigsaw seemingly legit hurting his leg also hurt things but Jigsaw deserve a lot of credit for actually finishing the match.

After the match Yamato chokes out Quackenbush until Hallowicked makes the save.

Bryan Danielson gets no introduction. Literally. Lights go out and he just appears in the ring when the lights come back on. It's Danielson vs. Naruki Doi as the third match of the show. Chain wrestling to start out. Neither man able to gain a definitive advantage early on. Hard strike exchange. Doi going after the leg of Danielson. Danielson targeting the arm and shoulder of Doi. Danielson tries to force Doi's hands to meet behind his back. Danielson bends Doi's arm backwards on the mat and stomps on the elbow. Danielson tries to make Doi's fingers meet the back of his elbow. Ouch. Danielson Special but Doi gets the ropes. Doi finally regains control after a flipping leg drop on the ropes. Boo Yay elbows. Danielson blocks the F5 into an ankle lock. Figure four by Doi as the crowd whoos. Exchange of quick pins and reversals. Series of more counters leads to the cattle mutilation but Doi is too close to the ropes. Stiff strike exchange ends with Danielson countering sliding kick into an ankle lock and somehow turning that into a German Suplex bridge for two. Doi hits the Doi 5 for two. Muscular Bomb is blocked by Danielson but Doi connects with a Tiger Suplex for two. Danielson drills Doi with a legit top rope belly to back suplex. Cattle Mutilation locked on center of the ring. Doi manages to roll over to his back but gets trapped in the crucifix elbow strikes. More stiff stiff stiff strikes. Top rope Doi 5 gets a near fall. Sliding kick gets a near fall. Muscular Bomb finally gets the job done for Doi. Goddamn this match was excellent. The only very minor complaint I have is I thought Doi could have sold the leg and ankle more because you had Danielson repeatedly locking in ankle locks only for Doi to run around a few seconds later like nothing happen.

Cima vs. Bryan Kendrick is interrupted by a backstage brawl between Dragon Kid and Yoshino. Exchange to start and Kendrick with a shot from behind. Iconoclasm from Cima gets two. Kendrick tries using the tights on a rollup but only gets two. Schwein and bombs away double knee drop for the win. Not gonna rate this one since it was almost like a highlight video.

Davey Richards vs. Shingo is next. Shingo sporting a shaved head. Damn I was hoping to see one of his signature funky hairstyles. Crowd chanting where's your mullet. Awesome. crowd split 50/50 for this one. This one is gonna be hard hitting. Commentators say in Japan Davey Richards is compared to Dynamite Kid. Shoulder tackle exchange. Kick/Chop exchange. Dragon screw leg whip in the ropes by Shingo. Working over the leg seems to be a theme of this show. Million dollar fist drop by Shingo on the knee of Richards. Double leg locks by both men. Stiff strike exchange. Shingo dumps Davey Richards backwards to the outside. Shingo tries kicking Richards' knee into the cheap seats. Davey Richards dragon screw arm whips Shingo hard into the ring apron. Richards tries kicking Shingo's elbow into the cheap seats. Richards locks Shingo in an arm submission but Shingo gets the ropes. Tequila sunrise/cloverleaf hybrid submission by Richards but Shingo gets the ropes. Shingo feeds his arm to Richards to kick the fuck out of. More stiff strikes. Lariat gets two for Shingo. Richards dives through the ropes and ends up in the fifth row. Richards gets a two after a vicious buzzsaw kick. It's hard to decide who kicks harder Davey Richards or Low Ki. This is awesome chant. Richards tries for the DR Driver but Shingo blocks it. Richards gets a cross arm breaker flowed into the triangle. Shingo's arm drops two times but not a third time as he uses impressive strength to dead lift Richards off the mat and walk backwards up the turnbuckles and connect with a Death Valley Bomb. Handspring elbow by Danielson is caught into a safe burning hammer. Lariat gets two for Shingo. Alarm clock by Richards. DR Driver gets a very close near fall. Made in Japan gets two and 15/16ths for Shingo. Shooting Star press by Richards gets two but Richards flows right into the Kimura and Shingo taps. Fuck me this match was ridiculous awesome.

I almost feel sorry for the Young Bucks having to follow that match. They're facing Ryo Saito and Genki Horiguchi. These two have awesome hairstyles going on. Horiguchi and Matt Jackson start out. Good counter wrestling to start. Nick and Saito tagged in. Nick snaps off a hurricanrana like it's nothing. Stereo dropkicks by the bucks. Bucks isolate the arm of Saito with repeated quick tags. Horiguchi locks in a seated abdominal stretch. Matt double stomps the extended hair of Genki. Horiguchi with a low blow behind the ref's back. Match is breaking down to a donnybrook on the outside. Fast double team by Genki and Saito gets two. Saito ties up Matt in the tree of woe and spits in his face. Corkscrew back elbow gets two for Horiguchi. Saito and Genki have been using some very heelish tactics. Even moreso than the usual stuff. Saito uses some kind of rope thing to choke Matt. Matt finally fights back with a standing Shiranui. Nick snaps off an inside out moonsault like nothing. Crazy dive but Matt is left wide open for a dropkick in the ropes. Falcon arrow gets two for Matt. Legdrop/Senton combo by the bucks gets two. Matt gets German suplexed head first into Nick's crotch. Flipping reverse buff blockbuster gets two for Matt Jackson. Nick superkicks the referee who was pulled into position by Horiguchi. More bang for your buck but no ref. Mist by Horiguchi. Double cross by Saito for the win. Match was good but not incredible. Certainly not as good as the Shingo-Richards match.
Rating: 3 and 3/4 Grenades

Overall: This show featured more American wrestlers in several different matches. In fact the only all Japan match was the opener. The rest were American vs. Japanese. This show built on a few things from the first Dragon Gate USA show. As a whole this show was very good. The only match that really didn't deliver was the Quack/Jigsaw vs. Yamato/Akuma match. But that is probably due to Jigsaw legit injuring his leg. If Jigsaw had been able to stay healthy who knows how much better the match would have turned out. But if you like stiff striking and painful submissions this show is for you.
Overall Rating: 4 and 1/4 Grenades out of 5
