20. Greg Valentine vs Ron Garvin – Submission Match – Royal Rumble, January 21st 1990

4d4a0aa2c2af7f7aaf18d79e4ab8d988.jpg

We start of the first match by going back to the Royal Rumble in 1990

This feud had been going since the summer of 1989 where Valentine had Cost Garvin his job as a wrestler so the rugged one would come in as a special referee, ring announcer etc to try and get back at Valentine until he finally got reinstated.

Both guys are wearing leg braces to apparently strengthen their own submission moves and Valentine has Jimmy Hart in his corner as manager.

Garvin starts the stronger but goes for an early pinfall before getting reminded it’s submissions only, a lot of stiff shots before Valentine takes control before both guys chop the crap out of each other and Garvin hits the headbutt to knock both guys down.

Ronnie regains his senses and goes for a piledriver which Valentine reverses, The Hammer takes back control before putting the figure four on before realising Garvin Hammer Jammer leg brace blocks the move.

Valentine then switches tactics are targets the back instead, Garvin comes back into the match with plenty of strikes, Garvin puts a leg submission on before Valentine grabs the rope to break it(which makes no sense considering there’s no DQ)

Both guys are on the outside chopping the crap out of each other, Garvin goes for a pile driver again on the outside but Valentine reverses it with a backdrop, they get back in the ring and Garvin end up in the corner in a tree of woe as Valentine continues to dominate, after Ronnie breaks free they bump into each other in the middle of the ring, while Garvin is down Hart removes the Hammer Jammer leg brace of him, Valentine puts the figure four on again, Garvin manages to reverse it before Valentine gets to the ropes.

The Hammer carries on targeting the leg of Garvin, before Garvin manages to remove Valentines leg brace, Valentine manages to get tied in the ropes, Jimmy Hart interferes and Garvin throws him in the ring, Garvin stalks him round the ring with one of the leg braces in his hand, Valentine attempts to sneak up on Garvin with the other leg brace but Ronnie turns round in time and hits him with the leg brace, he then follows up by putting the sharpshooter on for the victory.

Not long after this Garvin leaves the company while Valentine dyes his hair black and starts teaming with the Honky Tonk Man.

19. The Orient Express vs The Rockers – Wrestlemania VI, April 1st 1990

IMG_5281.jpeg

Our first look at the show stopper Shawn Michaels in these lists and I’m pretty certain it won’t be the last as he and fellow Rocker Marty Janettytake on Mr Fuji’s new tag team The Orient Express.

Tanaka and Janetty start the match and despite the a bit of early double teaming by the Express The Rockers take control with some double teaming of their own.

Fuji hooks the top rope with his cane and Sato follows up by ramming Marty into the post, Tanaka and Sato isolate Jannetty for a while before Shawn gets the tag in, after a bit of offence Tanaka kicks Shawn from the outside so the Express get in control again and isolate Michaels for several minutes with plenty of double teaming.

Marty finally gets the hot tag and takes control of both guys with a double noggin nocker, Rockers get in control again, as The Rockers go for the double fists from the top Fuji causes a distraction forcing Marty to stalk him, Sato uses the distraction to throw salt into Jannetys eyes, Jannetty sells it by stumbling over the guard rail and getting counted out.

These two teams would have an even better match at the Royal Rumble the following year.

18. Rick Martel vs Tito Santana - Main Event, November 23rd 1990

IMG_5304.jpeg

The story of this feud is while teaming Martel suffered a storyline injury so Santana carried on as a singles wrestler, Martel came back and wrestled singles for a while before they reunited for a match against The Brainbusters at Wrestlemania V.

During the match Martel turned heel and walked out on Santana leaving him to lose in a two on one situation, they feuded on and off for over a year but never had a singles match on PPV, personally I feel they should have wrestled at Wrestlemania VI where Rick and Tito faced Koko B Ware and The Barbarian respectively in two pointless matches.

By the time this match takes place Martel is in a feud with Jake Roberts and Santana is just an afterthought, also Rick is in full Model character.

The match starts off with Martel attacking Tito while he’s taking his shirt off, Santana manages to avoid a strike on the outside which results in Martel striking the post with his upper arm.

Tito then targets the arm and gets multiple near falls, Martel takes control by ramming Santana into the corner, The Model uses plenty of illegal moves including chokes and thumbs to the eye before targeting the back with a couple of back breakers, Martel goes to the top rope but Santana hits him with a low blow before taking back control including a clothesline of the second rope for a near fall, Rick reverses a figure four attempt with a roll up for a close pinfall, Martel the puts the Boston Crab on for the submission victory.
