I don't see how kayfabe can really work when the devious actions of heels, for example, are juxtaposed with their smiling charity work on the same show. Its like watching The Dark Knight and a couple of times during the film they'll randomly cut to Heath Ledger arriving on the red carpet for a couple of minutes.

^exactly.

I guess I'd agree that we're not going to see a return to the pure kayfabe of the 1980s, but at the very least,(IMO) Heels shouldn't be doing charity and public appearances, unless they're there to get heat or put over the faces for the delight of the crowd.

In professional wrestling, kayfabe is the portrayal of staged events within the industry as "real" or "true," specifically the portrayal of competition and rivalries between participants as being genuine or not of a worked nature. Referring to events or interviews as being a "work" means that the event/interview has been "kayfabed" or staged, or is part of a wrestling angle while being passed off as legitimate.

If they brought back kayfabe CM Punk wouldn't have a job, or would be a jobber to the stars at most.

His whole gimmick is "shoot promo guy".

I see your point, but on the other hand if kayfabe was still around he wouldn't have to do the shoot thing to get over.

The likes of Cena and the Big Show are among the worse offenders, remember a match a few years back when Show was supposed to be knocked out at ringside and yet engaged in conversation with fans lol.

To be fair though, Big Show sold a belt-shot in WCW for like 15 minutes as the NWO and Hogan were celebrating over top of him, lolololol

(nobody probably remembers that)
