Cody Rhodes attempts to gain trademark rights to his ring name

Cody Rhodes, real name Cody Runnels, is looking to gain the trademark rights to his ring name as he filed to trademark it on Monday, April 13, 2020. The filing was for merchandise and general pro wrestling use.

He has been going by the name “Cody” since he left WWE as the company owned the rights to the “Rhodes” name. Thus, he couldn’t use it.

Previously, WWE owned the trademark, but it ran out in October 2019. WWE had a six-month window to re-file their copyright, but let it expire. Now, the AEW Executive Vice President could be looking to use the name.

Here are the descriptions that were filed with the USPTO (United States Patent & Trademark Office):

“G & S: Bandanas; Hats; Hooded sweatshirts; Jackets and socks; Pants; Shirts; Sweatshirts”

“G & S: Entertainment in the nature of wrestling contests; Entertainment services, namely, live appearances by a professional wrestling and sports entertainment personality; Entertainment services, namely, personal appearances by a professional wrestler and sports entertainment personality; Entertainment services, namely, wrestling exhibits and performances by a professional wrestler and entertainer; Providing wrestling news and information via a global computer network; Providing online interviews featuring a professional wrestler and sports entertainer in the field of professional wrestling and sports entertainment for entertainment purposes”

Cody is slated to take on Darby Allin in the semi-finals of the AEW TNT Title Tournament on next week’s episode of AEW Dynamite.

Should he win the match then he will face the winner of Lance Archer vs. Dustin Rhodes in the finals of the tournament at the Double or Nothing pay-per-view event next month.

I remember getting into an argument about this with some peeps last year.

If Cody had the right to use his name in AEW, he totally would and now he's trying to.

And he should do. There's a MASSIVE legacy attached to the Rhodes name that fans like us appreciate and it lends some weight and credibility to any media appearances too.

Even The Rock has two words in his name (THE ROCK), because one word names just don't work for realistic characters. I think this is a great move for Cody as it re-attaches him to his legacy on screen AND it's a great thing for AEW because of the legacy of the Rhodes name on TNT.

They can make a lot out of this, it makes him more legit both as a wrestler and an on air business person and it re-attaches him to his brother. This is good.

I believe you and I went back and forth about it. And that’s because long before this Cody claimed he could always use the name. So unless he was lying back then, I don’t see why he’d all the sudden become Cody Rhodes. He did a Q&A on Twitter back in 2018 before AEW was a thing and he said he liked using just Cody. This YouTube video references the Q&A:

As I believe I explained back then he was in fact full of shit and the fact he just applied for the trademark now that WWE let it go, proves it.

Cody has spent the last two years preserving every piece of his father’s legacy and has trademarked Bash at the Beach among other things.

His brother and his wife both compete with the Rhodes name. Cody was trying to make it seem like WWE had no power over him. He wants to be a Rhodes again, though. 100%. Cody is just not a good solo name.
