Figured...

But it was also Punk's obligation to show up for work, instead of walking away... Could WWE have fired him like right away? Ya know, after realizing he wasn't coming back...
Exactly, WWE's learned it's lesson on firing people like that (Ultimate Warrior). They chose to keep him getting paid in hopes of him returning as well.

Basically, WWE isn't at fault ( for the first time)

As much as I love Punk... I'd LOL if he was forced back to the company, in order to finish those 6 months he skipped, but was obliged to do.
I would have the mark out moment of my life if he jobbed out to Ryder.

I suppose it's possible he had a retirement clause put in where they pay up his remaining salary if he retired within a certain time frame.

Could be... I'd love to know the story behind this...

Maybe they'll make Punk come back and he can job to Lesnar for an entire Iron Man match for 30 minutes,

Tiny bit of me tells me that this is inspired by Del Rio beating the WWE lawyers.

Key difference: Del rio got fired, Punk walked out and breached his contract

although he did walk out, he should be paid royalties. It's equally unprofessional to not pay him, because he walked out.

Hardly. If I don't pay my phone contract I don't get to use the tariff too. It's a simplified version but you can't have it both ways. If you breach the contract the other side don't have to honor their side.

No, it's more like a show being aired with you having a cameo, and not getting paid. If they are going to use Punk's model and most likely footage of him, he should be getting paid for it. Just because he walked out and did not go to shows, he should still be getting paid. Chances are Punk will get some money out of this, because legally he should, morally, no.

So he breaches his contract yet they should pay him? Why because he signed over his likeness in his employment contract? The employment contract he breached by not showing up for the past 6 months.

But just because he didn't show up in 6 months, does not make his lose the right to be paid for being in the game. It's like saying in WWE 2K18 he shouldn't get paid if he is in that game. Just because his contract is up and he breached it, does not mean he can legally not be paid the royalties because he is no longer with the WWE.

Being in the game because the date of his contract is fine. But WWE 2K need to be willing to actually pay to sell the game with him in it because he is not with them anymore.
