Great American Bash 1989. Yes, long before these PPV's were a constant source for suck, it was actually pretty good. This one in particular is considered to be among the greatest PPV's of all time (A lot of people call it the greatest).
Here's the card:
King of the Hill Battle Royal for $50,000: Bill Irwin, Brian Pillman, Dan Spivey, Eddie Gilbert, Kevin Sullivan, Mike Rotundo, Ranger Ross, Rick Steiner, Ron Simmons, Scott Hall, Scott Steiner, Sid Vicious, Steve Williams, Terry Gordy
(This was pretty good for a Battle Royal, but given the talent involved, that shouldn't be much of a surprise).
Wild Bill Irwin vs. Brian Pillman
The Skyscrapers vs. The Dynamic Dudes (Skyscrapers=Spivey and Sid, Dynamic Dudes=Shane Douglas and Johnny Ace)
Tuxedo Match: Paul E. Dangerously vs. Jim Cornette
Those three matches were OK, but nothing mind-blowing. For what its worth, the Tuxedo Match was more entertaining than it had any right to be.
Now the show picks up.
Texas Tornado Tag: Rick & Scott Steiner vs. The Varsity Club (Mike "IRS" Rotunda and Kevin Sullivan)
This one is action from start to the finish, with pretty much no restholds. Its the first truly great match on the show.
The Great Muta vs. Sting (World TV Title)
For my money, the greatest match under minutes in history. Muta shows why he was able to stand out among other japanese wrestlers, and Sting puts in one of the best matches of his career.
Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat vs Lex Luger (US Title)
Proving how AWESOME Ricky Steamboat was, he leads Luger to what is arguably the best match of his career (Luger had one against Flair which was just as good). To be honest, it would be five stars if not for the finish.
War Games: Michael Hayes, Jimmy Garvin, Terry Gordy, Samu & Fatu vs. Stan Lane, Bobby Eaton, Steve Williams, Hawk & Animal
Its WarGames, so you can expect great things. Once again, look at the talent involved.
Terry Funk vs. Ric Flair (NWA Title)
This isn't the I Quit match, but its just as good. Lots of hard-hits, lots of blood, lots of brawling from two of the greatest of all time.
I'll admit, the first half of the show isn't as good as it could have been, but the second half is incredible. If there's one Non-WWE PPV that you need to see, its this one.
