Cena Wants to Re-Design the WWE Title, Praises Young Talent

During a recent interview conducted for Mix106.1 in Philadelphia, WWE star John Cena discussed several topics, including who he'd most like to wrestle right now other than The Rock, who he feels are the brightest young talents in WWE right now, and more. When the topic of the WWE Spinner Belt came up, Cena noted that it's the most purchased belt in WWE history, but also said the following:​

“Being the guy who truly invented it, it needs to change. It has been the way it’s been for years now. It’s had it’s run. It doesn’t even spin anymore. It’s heavy. It’s awkward. It really is. An average championship belt weighs about 12 pounds. The current WWE spinning championship weighs 27 pounds. So we need a rehash. I’m proactively trying to do that, but I’ve only got so much stroke, guys. I can’t do everything.”​

Cena mentions that other than The Rock, he'd most like to face Stone Cold Steve Austin, and believes Austin has one match left in him, and although CM Punk wants that match, he'd like to "throw his name into the hat." You can check out the entire interview below:​

Very excellent interview and one of the best I've probably seen, goes over some good questions and Cena has some very nice responses. I agree with the spinner belt statement and it definitely needs to change as it looks awkward when most wrestlers hold it and it just doesn't look right to me and isn't a good championship belt, it looks very awkward with Punk holding it. I'm sure the reason they've kept it so long is because it sells so much. The sad reality is, merchandise is the lifeblood of the company right now (or at least, they do things as if that's the case), so they do certain things and make decisions based on merchandise sales.

Punk would probably miraculously start whining if Cena got the Austin match though.

Considering both Punk and Steve want the match I'd bitch too, because at that point it would be about the WWE stepping in and interfering. Also considering it could actually help Punk where as Cena doesn't need these types of matches would only make Punk more justified.

I loved the interview and it was enjoyable but no way in hell does Cena deserve to get Austin. Let Cena get Taker or the Rock again. I know Cena is the company guy but he can't get all the legends. Punk deserves that epic battle against Austin.

Punk/Austin makes more sense just cause of how their character will clash and could make for an awesome storyline. Cena/Austin build wise might be a little weird imo. But anyways as far as the belt he has said this several times so nothing really new there.

For years now people have been begging WWE to change the WWE title design. It is long overdue for a change and it doesn't suit any wrestler other than Cena. It looks tacky and even though it sells well WWE should know that if they create a good enough design that will sell as well. Plus they will still sell this belt even if it isn't the current design.

Doesn't even suit Cena anymore as he's not he Rapper character he used to be. If they wanted a belt for him now something military looking would actually be a better fit. Can't believe it's that heavy though.

Good point, he has changed his character since he brought in the title so it doesn't even match him. Would be nice to see a normal design that isn't as tacky, no moving parts and no "bling" on it. Going back to a more traditional title would be better.

As for the WWE Title, it's nice of him to admit it does need changing. It maybe the biggest selling belt of all time, but it's ugly and gotten stale and needs to be changed ASAP.
