Hey again wrestling fans...I hope your lives are glorious at the moment...

So as you can tell by the title...I'm here again to pick
your collective brains and find out some information.

So...What can you tell me about: The Cena vs. Orton feud

maxresdefault.jpg

With Cena once again Champion and Orton once again winning the Rumble...
I noticed many fans "screaming in rage" about another possible Cena/Orton
match. Now apparently they are having this very match (Non-Title of course)
on the next SmackDown (Unless the situation changes on the night)

Now I know very little about the this entire feud as it took place
during my many off years from wrestling and I have to be honest...I
haven't really seen Cena or Orton wrestle that much.

Most of my knowledge of the two comes from Whatculture videos and
general opinions and comments made around here.

My opinions are as follows:
Cena is way better than I expected him to be...but...he's too normal for me to really like him...
&
Orton seems pretty cool...I like the way he sometimes slides/slithers around the ring...and of
course the RKO may-be the greatest ever finisher in wrestling history.

As far as the actual feud goes...all I know is:

~ It went on for way too long with the title being swapped back and forth...
(Sounds like a recent feud that wrapped up late last year)

And that's it...so could I get your thoughts, opinions, memories and why this
feud seems to be a big sticking point with WWE fans.

Thanks again...and like I said...any and all opinions are welcome...and I'll
see you all around the traps.

I don't remember a whole lot. Overall the feud was good, but it all happened too fast. Cena vs Orton happened almost every month and I think that was people's main gripe. And they could probably have skipped one or two title changes.

I also remember John Cena's dad getting involved in the feud to amp up the intensity of it. As in he allowed Orton to beat him up to put some sympathy on John

This does not include weekly matches

For me I like to think it's more personal. These two guys were the next two big guys when they were young. Vince wanted them to be the next Rock/Austin with Randy being the face of WWE. He was supposed to win the World title where Batista won it, but they said fuck it and made him win at Summerslam as a face. That run completely messed him up, and his drug use made it even worse. John Cena was the next guy it seems to me even though they did have their eyes on Cena as a massive guy for the company. I still believe the spot Cena has now was supposed to be Randy's spot as does other. Let's start with the feud

These guys had matches in their version of NXT called OVW. It has gone on longer than you think lol, but I'll keep to the WWE stuff here.

Summerslam 2007. John Cena has been champion for like a year and Randy didn't have a World title reign since 2005. This was when John Cena first became ultra hard to beat and the fans did know that. Randy Orton became number one contender for the title and the match was to take place at Summerslam. Randy being the heel went after Cena with a RKO to kick things off. They were building Randy here as well since he beat a few big names at the Pay Per Views before. He beat Shawn Michaels, Dusty Rhodes and RVD. The legend killer thing kicked off around this time as well I believe. We also had the RKO on the chair to Cena at Saturday Night Main Event which was cool. Pretty basic feud up until this point, but the fans were probably hyped for it. Either way Cena wins LOL

So yea, after giving Cena the clean win they write another match for the two at Unforgiven. Orton needed another match, so he went out of his way to get it. Randy attacked Cena's father and the used the punt kick. The GM makes the match for Unforgiven. John Cena attacks the GM of Raw (Idk why) but he does. John Cena was banned from the arena for the next Raw, but John still does get in since WWE are terrible at these things. Randy is in the ring trolling Cena since he thinks he isn't there, but Cena does indeed attack him. But yea, we move onto the PPV and Cena wins LOL

Cena ended up getting hurt and Randy was awarded the title at No Mercy. He then lost it to Triple H and won it back in the main event of the same show.

John Cena returns at the rumble in 08 and wins it. He then uses his World title challenge for No Way Out instead of Maina. Cena used the "I don't forget" line while Randy used the "I put you on the shelf" line. They also played the is he 100% play, but he soon did show he was. Either way Cena wins via DQ since Randy hits the ref

ortonvsref.jpg

And we move onto Mania. HHH does get in here and it ends up as 3 way. Just the year before this HHH was hurt as well so this was his first Mania back. They played the Randy injured Cena part again since that's a big deal. HHH had won the EC match at No Way Out to get in this match I believe. To be fair to Randy he has been going really strong in his title reign, but the match happens and Randy wins by pinning Cena I think.

orton_wm24.jpg

Well, it's done for a while haha....It does happen again though. Their next big match is at Night Of Champion 2009 and it was HHH VS Randy VS John again. I don't remember it too much, but it would be the same build as the other with them playing off the fact that Randy injured HHH this time. Randy wins

1c3ecf85812924d20d1a3c0590b8df7d.jpg

And now we move onto Summerslam. Cena won a beat the clock challenge and got himself a match with Randy. It was a pretty basic feud here with Cena playing the face and Randy playing the heel. Welp, this finish was weird. Some random guy from the audience came in and attacked Cena (Turns out it was Ted Dibiase's brother), but Randy wins. It was pretty much a dirty finish

summerslam-2009-20090823111054027.jpg

We onto Breaking Point where they had a pretty good match. It was I Quit and I thought it was good. I'm going to guess they had pretty good build for this one, but Cena wins after getting a crazy beat down by Orton.

cenachamp.jpg

The next match was Hell In A Cell. Randy Orton was basically going to do anything to get his title at this point. Cena had never been in a Hell In A Cell match until this point, but Randy wins the match clean if I remember correctly.

f2a4734fe9130667151d356f1ce826e4.jpg

And the next match was at Bragging Rights in a Iron Man match. I believe it had something like "The other man won't be able to challenge the other for a WWE title match again" or something like that. It played off the whole feud here which was fun to watch as well. It did bring up 2007 a lot which was good, but they also had if Cena loses he leaves Raw as well. I legit just remembered that right there, but Cena wins.

BR00.jpg

And wow, we're off again for a bit. Their next match was at TLC 2014 for the first WWE World Heavyweight Championship match. I'm sure you saw this one, so I'll just move to the result. Randy wins.

d350f06f089b6bc4b82029a0b58078f4.jpg

And their next match was at the Rumble 2014. Again, I'm sure you watched these ones so Randy wins. Either way it's a basic feud for the titles, but a dirty finish probably did go down here.

efb963f887cd4d261d9de3c0df347260.jpg

and I believe their next and last match as of now was at Hell In A Cell (Unless you count the EC match and 4 way at Battleground), but Cena did beat Randy here.

Wow...it just went on and on...And I've never seen a Cena vs. Orton Match...

Well...I guess if either of them decides to "retire" they could have a career vs. career match
and bring all this history up...would make for a pretty epic story and promo packages.

So...WWE were going to push Randy as "the guy"...but Randy was a "bad boy" so Cena
became "the face of the company"?

Randy would've been face since he was supposed to wrestle HHH at Mania. That fell apart when Brock left and WWE wanted a new youngest World champion. His reign was terrible and not many got behind him.It could have been different if he got the Mania push that Batista got like planned. The drug use also messed him up from being the top guy.

The plan was Brock Lesnar VS John Cena and Randy Orton VS HHH in the main event. This however fell apart when Brock left and the Randy title reign died. That Mania card would've been great for both as the two top guys, but Randy was on Raw and imo would have been the face of WWE

Cena was practically plan D.
In his OVW they had him, Brock, Orton and Batista. Brock was the clear first pick to be THE guy, but he split. So then they went with Batista, but he did not connect on that level. Still a main eventer, but not on the THE man level. And Orton was always going to be the chief rival and second biggest/biggest name.

Heck, John was almost fired before he busted out a Vanilla ice costume on a halloween episode of Smackdown and did freestyle raps. Next week: Thuganomics.

Cena vs Orton is a feud that has simply happened too often. Their matches were good for the most part. But it seemed like orton and Cena would cross paths one way or another, and then proceed to headline like 20 Raw main events and 5 PPV's. Sure, if you're stone cold steve Austin fighting the rock it makes a little more sense to do this. But, they'd have cena and orton headline everything for too long, fighting in every match you can think of: HIAC, Iron Man, I Quit, etc. It was drug out and then brought up again years later, around 2013-2014, and they fought in a TLC match that Orton surprisingly won for the unified WWE World Heavyweight Title (mind you fans were literally chanting "YES" the entire time their title match was announced). Then, to make matters worse, they had them have "one more match," even though the TLC match was supposed to be the final nail in the coffin for their feud, at least for a while. But, nope, we get them the following month. Fans shit all over their RR match, even though it was half decent, and bray wyatt cost cena the match.

All in all, their feud doesn't suck per say, it's just 100% worn out. if they seriously choose to have CEna face orton at mania, I honest to God won't watch. All this talent, and Vince resorts to his old mentality of "big must fight big guy, and only big name must fight big name, even though this has literally enen 2,000 times with these same men."

These days, Orton is about as charismatic as a wet sock.

Thanks for that in depth recap @TheFrostyBlur !

I never got to see any of their feud either as that was during the time I also took a haitus.

Although one thing I wanted to point out was the legend killer thing was a thing by atleast 2005. I remember seeing that nickname while I still watched.

I'm interested to see a match between them though

That's just his character now right? "Actions speak louder than words"? Charismatic-ally Un-charismatic?

Nope. They call him a robot for a reason...

That and Randy "Borton" aka boring.

Put it this way.. He hasn't been anything special since he stopped being the legend killer.

Okay...well...I guess I just like him cause he's currently a Wyatt...

Still...

I may have liked him more had I liked Bray but they ruined his character. Bray is someone I tend to forget about, which is sad because he is a good wrestler, specially for his size. It is funny... so many people complain, including us here on the forum... But who is really to blame for these wrestlers flopping? You know Roman has improved SO MUCH and now that he is actually better, heck he is at his BEST in the ring, people still hate him. When he was in the Shield I can't tell you how many people on this forum alone were fan girling to his superman punches and spears. I was one of few who liked Seth the most. In fairness to Orton, it likely isn't his fault he is boring. It comes right back down to horrible booking and the puppeteer having his fingers too far up the wrestler's butts that they can't even properly express themselves or their character. The only reason people like Orton, Roman, Bray, ect aren't over like they should be comes down to them and the way they have to do horrible booking, horrible storytelling, and beating a dead horse with a stick with the same BS week in and week out. I don't think you saw much of Punk's run on SmackDown. When he was on there, they let him show his passion and he knew how to piss people off. I feel like WWE has lost their spark and the wrestlers are paying the price. Punk likely saw it coming before we did and that is why he left.

That was a bit of a vent there... :phew:

TLDR: Orton is likely only bad because WWE made him that way.
