I haven't read anyone's replies, I'll just respond directly to your post. I haven't seen all of Lucha, and I'm not an expert. I won't spoil, but I'm on Season 3 and I've seen about half of it I think.
Lucha Underground is awesome. It's fun. It doesn't always follow the standard rules of pro wrestling. Sometimes the matches follow the type of logic you'd get in a horror movie or something, but it works for Lucha.
Take Matanza. He's basically booked as the Michael Meyers of Lucha Underground. Unstoppable monster in a jumpsuit. It works though, and you understand his place in the hierarchy.
I'm not entirely certain about all of the backstory, but clearly The Temple has some mystical powers and draw to it. It makes sense in the context of the show, that men would compete against women from time to time. They're all here for the same reasons, so they logically would end up as adversaries.
