WCW Nitro #9 30th October 1995
Live from the the Hara Arena in Dayton, Ohio

Before we get to the usual Nitro opening we of course recap the events of last night’s blockbuster Halloween Havoc event which saw Hulk Hogan retain his championship in the main event against Lex Luger, after the Total Package hesitation on using the title belt as a weapon ultimately cost him the match. Elsewhere the big story was Arn Anderson winning the US Championship by joining up with Brian Pillman and turning on longtime partner Ric Flair. Plus The Radicals victory over Harlem Heat thanks to them using Sherri as a human shield and the other title change which saw Eddie Guerrero defeat DDP after an errant Max Muscle interference. There was plenty more controversy too including Brian Pillman and Randy Savage’s war, The Giant defeating Vader on his debut and The Barbarian returning to help Meng defeat Hawk.

Apocalypse Now

After the video we cut to the usual Nitro opening and announcers Eric Bischoff and Bobby Heenan are about to welcome us to this special 90 minute show when Brian Pillman and new WCW US Champion Arn Anderson storm to the ring! They’re both dressed in jeans and receive a chorus of boos as Bischoff notes they are not scheduled for interview time right now. Pillman however grabs a mic and says: “I’m gonna need all you people to shut the hell up right now because something important is about to happen!” More boos as Pillman continues regardless: “For weeks I’ve been injuring people and sending a message to the so-called big boys of WCW that I am tired of watching you guys come in here and earn massive paychecks while people like me who have been here for years are pushed to the side. And one of those lazy bums called Randy Savagersure learned the hard way last night that messing with the loose cannon will leave you bloodied and beaten, one, two, three! And now I want to introduce my comrade who beat the biggest disappointment of them all Ric Flair last night! Ladie and gentlemen, the new WCW US Champion - Arn Anderson!”

The crowd continues to boo as Arn takes the mic: “For nearly a decade Ric I’ve been your enforcer, I’ve had your back. But now it's my time in the spotlight! You see it's a combination of two things: that battle royale where you wanted me to just give up and Brian Pillman here pointing out how much of a selfish ass you really are! It was never about my career or Barry’s or Tully’s or whoever - it was always about The Nature Boy. So what I did at Halloween Havoc was long overdue and I’m proud to be the United States Champion for the first time in my career. And Ric I hope you see sense and retire because you’re never coming back from the beating we gave you. So Sting, Meng whoever wants to try and take this gold away from me, be my guest because you saw what I did to someone I once considered a friend - imagine what I’d do to an enemy!”

Pillman then grabs the mic: “Now one last thing and this goes out to everyone in World Championship Wrestling. You may have thought that the Four Horsemen were the most dangerous faction to ever set foot in this company but now you’re not looking at the horsemen, you are looking at the Apocalypse!” With that Pillman and Anderson leave through the crowd to more boos. Bischoff and Heenan reflect on what we just heard as its time for our first match to get underway!

WCW Television Championship: Eddie Guerrero © vs Lord Steven Regal

Our opening bout was made last night at Halloween Havoc after Lord Steven Regal who is making his way to the ring first and looking absolutely disgusted with this Ohio audience accepted new TV Champion Eddie Guerrero’s open challenge. The champion comes out next and gets a decent pop, very much still in the white meat babyface era of his career but his exploits have already earned him the respect of the crowd. The bell rings as the two men circle each other and lock up with Regal getting the advantage and hitting Eddie with a side headlock takeover. Guerrero however flips over and locks his Lordship in a seated head scissors before Regal pushes Guerrero off him. As Regal stands up he is nailed with a dropkick and the former tag and TV champion staggers to the outside only to be met with a plancha to the outside from Eddie that wipes him out! Guerrero high fives the fans at ringside as we cut to our first break of the evening.

As we come back Lord Steven Regal is back in control after turning the tide on Eddie and whipping him into the steel steps during the break. Regal has focused on the arm and he’s stomping away at it before locking in an armbar on Eddie. He really wrenches the champ’s arm back but Eddie counters and pins Regal’s shoulders to the mat: one…two…NO! Regal escapes the surprise pin as Guerrero runs to the ropes and springboards off for a cross body but instead gets met with a big knee to the gut. Regal then suplexes Eddie halfway across the ring before locking back onto the arm with some more stomps before executing a hammerlock scoop slam so Eddie crashes down on the arm. Guerrero is screaming in pain as Regal props the arm on the second rope and goes for a running kicks but Eddie uses his free arm to catch the leg! He then gets to his feet and tries to take advantage but Regal responds with a forearm to the face followed up with a stiff European uppercut that almost knocks Eddie out of his boots. Regal covers: one…two…NO!

Guerrero is still alive in this contest! Lord Steven then goes for the Regalplex but Eddie counters and hits his foe with a vertical suplex. Then in the classic Eddie way he rolls through and hits two more to execute the three amigos. He shakes his arm in pain after the move as he covers: one…two…NO! Regal kicks out! Eddie then looks to go to the top rope but he takes too long with the injured arm and Regal grabs him by the arm from the top turnbuckle and arm drags him all the way to the canvas! Lord Steven then grabs Eddie and hits the Regal cutter before covering the champ one…two…three? NO! Somehow Guerrero still manages to kick out. Regal is pissed now and goes for a powerbomb but Eddie counters into a hurricanrana that sends Steven straight into the corner. Eddie then goes for a monkey flip out of the corner but Regal counters, tries a power bomb again but Eddie counters and hits a frankensteiner straight into a pining combo! One…two…three!

Winner in 11 minutes (including commercials) and still WCW TV Champion, Eddie Guerrero

Eddie does it, he manages to pin Lord Steven Regal and continue his reign as WCW TV Champion. The challenger rolls to the outside in disbelief that he was caught out like that but as Regal exits the ring DDP and his bodyguard Max Muscle enter the squared circle and Muscle clobbers Eddie from behind! He starts stomping away at Eddie as Dallas watches before Muscle hauls Eddie up, throws him towards DDP who catches the new champ and plants him into the canvas with a Diamond Cutter! DDP grabs the mic and says: “Hey Guerrero you snot-nosed punk! You got lucky last night thanks to my bodyguard here Max Muscle making a dumb decision but pal that ain’t happening again. Because next week Max is gonna make it up to me and bring the TV Championship back to the Diamond Mine! So enjoy your seven days left with the belt because next week the party’s over!” DDP and Muscle leave the fallen Eddie in the ring and Bischoff introduces some unseen footage from Halloween Havoc.

You can’t kill the Macho Man

We cut to some black and white footage of the bloodied Macho Man Randy Savage coming back through the curtain somehow under his own power after his brutal match with Brian Pillman at Halloween Havoc. Savage screams: “Hey cameraman you’re gonna want to hear this!” Savage continues as he stares straight down the barrel of the camera: “Guess what Pillman no matter what you throw at me you cannot kill the Macho Man Randy Savage! I’m going to enter a place, so dark, so disturbing that you’ll wish you were the one with the broken arm Pillman because if you think this is over between me and you, oh yeah, if you think this over when I have blood still running through my veins then you may just be the dumbest man in WCW! So Brian watch your back, look over your shoulder and brace yourself because I’m making it my mission to beat your ass!” Savage then shoves the camera down and walks off as we head to break.

The Giant vs Jim Duggan

As we come back everyone’s favourite patriot ‘Hacksaw’ Jim Duggan is making his way to the ring as the crowd chant ‘USA’ and ‘hooooo’ with the fan favourite. Duggan’s positive demeanour however soon fades because his opponent tonight on Nitro is here - it's the the 7ft plus, 500 pound Giant! The big man made his debut at Halloween Havoc last night and impressively dispatched Vader and now has his sights set on Hacksaw. Giant emotionlessly climbs over the top rope and stares down Duggan as this bout begins. Duggan goes on offence straight away as he tries to shoulder barge Giant a couple of times but the big man simply does not move despite Jim’s efforts. Duggan then adopts the three point stance and charges at Giant but he gets met with a big boot and follows up with a giant leg drop as Bischoff wonders if this could be a shot at Hulk Hogan. That leg drop pretty much crushed Hacksaw but Giant is far from done as he hauls Duggan up and slams him into the canvas. Giant then arrogantly steps on Duggan and walks over him like its nothing as Jim is badly winded by this on the mat. Giant then signals for the chokeslam as Hacksaw eventually staggers to his feet. He grabs Jim by the throat and hauls him up in the air and then turns to all four sides of the arena with Duggan suspended in midair, displaying him like a trophy to the crowd before slamming him into the canvas. Giant then covers: one…two…three!

Winner in three minutes, The Giant

An easy win for The Giant over a seasoned competitor like Jim Duggan sends an ominous message to the WCW locker room. Giant then grabs Hacksaw and throws him over the top rope like he’s a piece of trash before taking a mic. He speaks: “WCW has never seen anyone like me! I’m seven feet tall, I’m 500 pounds and when I look up and down this company I fear no man! On November 26th its the first ever World War Three match and I’m announcing right now that I am entering this contest. Mark my words there isn’t anyone of my 29 opponents who can throw me over the top rope and Hulk Hogan mark the date December 27th in your calendar because at Starrcade I’m taking the WCW Championship from you!” Giant then leaves the ring after that very direct message to the locker room and Hulk Hogan.

Sonny Onoo makes a promise

We then cut to a video package where the debuting Sonny Onoo steps into frame. The Japanese manager is dressed in a sharp black suit and has a message for the fans of WCW: “World Championship Wrestling is about to witness that the true best wrestlers in the world are not from the United States but the real warriors are from Japan. My name is Sonny Onoo and I am bringing the best wrestlers from the East to take over WCW! The new WCW Women’s division will be dominated by the stars from Japan that I manage and the men of WCW cannot compete with the fierce wrestlers that I have under contract So I am here to put the whole of this company on notice - the Japanese revolution is coming to WCW and there is nothing you can do to stop it!”

Lex Luger speaks

Following this video we cut backstage where Mean Gene is standing by with Lex Luger. Gene commiserates Luger on his loss to Hulk Hogan last night and asks for The Total Package’s thoughts on where it all went wrong for him last night. Luger says: “Well Gene I had a choice last night - when I was holding that WCW Championship belt in my hands. I could take the low road, whack Hulk over the head with the belt and be known as a fraudulent champion or take the high road and well that’s the path I took last night. That path didn’t lead me to the gold but I know by taking the high road I’ll be known as a true champion once again when I get that WCW Championship back. The old Lex Luger would’ve taken that shortcut but I’m proud of myself as I'm sure the fans and my best friend Sting are proud of me for doing the right thing.” Luger looks very regretful despite the ultra babyface promo as he maybe still thinks the low road was the way to go. Okerlund asks what’s next for Lex and Luger replies: “Its real simple Gene - November 26th the first ever World War Three match I’m throwing 29 other men over the top rope of I have to - no matter how big they are - to win that World War Three Match and get my rematch against Hulk Hogan at Starrcade!” Luger then leaves the frame as we cut to break.

Tag Team #1 Contenders Match: Sabu and Mr JL vs Harlem Heat

As we come back the mysterious Sabu and Mr JL are making their way out to the ring fresh off of defeating The Nasty Boys in a falls count anywhere match last week. They have the chance now to go up against new tag champs The Radicals but only if they beat former champs Harlem Heat who make their way out to the ring next. Booker T and Stevie Ray are accompanied by Sherri, who Dean Malenko used as a human shield last night to cunningly win the match for his team. Booker and Stevie looked pissed off and JL is waiting in the ring to start the bout. Booker T is starting for his team and this bout is underway! Booker goes for a lockup to start but JL knows that he doesn’t match up to his opponent’s strength so he grabs Booker’s arm and springs off the ropes looking for an arm drag but Booker just grabs him and slams him down to the mat with authority. JL gets back up quickly but finds himself on the end of some clubbing forearm before Booker whips him into the corner and takes the masked man out with a running boot. He then tags in big brother Stevie and the two whip JL into the ropes, where Sabu blind tags in, but still hit JL with a double backdrop. Stevie goes for a cover on JL but the ref doesn’t count as JL’s not legal! Sabu then comes in for a springboard splash but Ray moves out of the way and Sabu crashes and burns into his own partner. Stevie then goes for a spinebuster but Sabu knocks the big man with a few blows to the head and then counters with a jumping facebuster! Sabu covers: one…two…NO!

Stevie kicks out as Sabu tags JL back in and the two hit a drop toe hold/slingshot leg drop combo to the Heat member. Sherri on the outside urges Stevie on as now JL goes for a moonsault but Stevie counters and rolls out of the way! Ray then grabs his masked foe and plants him a spinebuster and covers: one…two…NO! JL kicks out. Stevie then crawls to the corner and tags in Booker who runs wild on his opponent with a series of clotheslines before nailing him with a Harlem sidekick! JL is then set up for the axe kick but Sabu tries to cut it off only for Stevie to steam in and take out the ECW alumnus with a clothesline. This gives JL time to recover however and duck the kick, and grab Booker and try and nail him with a pile driver but this time Booker counters with a backdrop! Booker then tags in his brother Stevie and the pair hit a double sidewalk slam to JL. Stevie covers: one…two…three? NO! Sabu is in to break up the pin. Sabu then throws Booker to the outside before he and JL then nail Stevie Ray with a double DDT. JL then bends down and Sabu runs and bounces off his back and dives onto Booker T on the outside - except the former tag champ ducks and accidentally nails Sherri! Its like Halloween Havoc all over again for Harlem Heat! Sabu is taken out on the outside and Booker cannot believe it and in a fury goes back into the ring and goes to Harlem sidekick JL but the masked man ducks and Booker nails Stevie by accident! JL capitalises and tosses Booker to the outside and hits a springboard moonsault to Stevie! He covers: one…two…three!

Winners in eight minutes, Sabu and Mr JL

It just gets worse and worse for Harlem Heat. A fuming Booker is checking on Sherri on the outside while Sabu gets back in the ring and has his hand raised alongside his partner. At that moment the music of The Radicals hits and the intense Dean Malenko and Chris Benoit make their way out to the stage. The pair get a mixed reaction as they simply raise their newly won tag belts in the air as Bischoff says we will hear from the champs on Saturday Night to see what they have to say about their actions at Halloween Havoc. Nitro then heads to break as the commentators hype up that we will hear from Hulk Hogan next!

Hulk Hogan addresses the fans

As we come back Mean Gene is standing in the ring and he introduces the WCW Champion Hulk Hogan. The champ comes out to a mostly positive reaction and he poses and grandstands for the fans, looking very pleased with himself after retaining his title last night at Halloween Havoc. Bischoff is of course losing his mind on commentary while Bobby Heenan is just as disgusted as usual with the Hulkster. Okerlund congratulates Hogan on his win last night and asks the champion to reflect on the match. Hogan says: “Well let me tell ya something Mean Gene. The Hulkster was in the fight of his life last night against Lex Luger, and while we may not have seen eye to eye Luger I respect you for doing the right thing last night and not hitting me with the belt. So I know that myself and all the hulkamaniacs out there respect you a little more dude for staying on the straight and narrow and it’ll be my pleasure brother to fight you again for the WCW Championship when the time is right brother.”

Some kind words for Lex there from Hogan but before Gene gets to ask his next question Hulk cuts him off and says: “Now I’ve got something to say to a certain Sonny Onoo who I saw talking trash about the US of A earlier in this show jack. You know Gene that I’ve got the red white and blue flowing through my reigns brother and I don’t stand for people coming to WCW and talking down to this great nation! You talk about the Japanese revolution brother but nobody from any country can claim to have the best wrestlers if they haven’t beaten Hulk Hogan! So Sonny in two weeks on Nitro I’ll take on any of your best Japanese wrestlers and show why they can’t hold a candle to a true American brother!”

Okerlund then has one more question for Hogan - what are his thoughts on the upcoming World War Three match. “Gene I’ve already heard a lot of talk from everyone back there in the locker room that this World War Three match is going to be the biggest WCW has ever seen but I just want every wrestler to know you can go through 29 other men to get to the Hulkster but at Starrcade when the winner has to step into the ring with me for this WCW Championship, the only thing anyone will be saying is whatcha gonna do when Hulkamania runs wild on you!” With that ‘American Made’ plays in the arena and Hogan grandstands and showboats some more with a stern message sent to all involved in the World War Three match.

A Fearsome Challenge

We then cut backstage where The Faces of Fear, Meng and Barbarian, are standing by with Tony Schiavone. Tony asks the fearsome duo about their alliance and Barbarian’s return to WCW. Barbarian replies: “Men like Hawk are weak! They claim to be tough but I’ve come back to WCW because I know real strength when I see it in a man like Meng. So last night I returned to really strike fear into the hearts of the WCW fans and wrestlers - because when you look at me and Meng we are the faces of fear!” Both monsters maniacally laugh until Road Warrior Hawk bursts into frame but already he is surrounded by a gaggle of security guards stopping an all-out war from breaking out. “Hey Barabrain, Meng I fear no man so if you want to get involved in my business then you’ve got a hell of a beating coming to ya! Next week on Nitro its over for you pal!” Barbarian then lunges at Hawk but the security is keeping all three men separate as Tony throws it back to the commentators.

US Championship #1 Contenders Match: Meng vs Sting

The man called Sting makes his way out to the ring next as our main event is about to get underway. The Stinger of course lost his US Championship last night but Arn Anderson never pinned Sting in that three way match with Ric Flair. Sting is in the ring and awaits the arrival of Meng who makes his way down the aisle with the equally impressive Barbarian by his side. Meng gets in the ring and our main event, with a shot at Arn Anderson at World War Three on the line, is underway. The duo lock up and Sting powers Meng into the corner before the ref calls for the break. Sting then calls to the crowd but Meng emerges from the corner like a freight train and decks the Stinger with a big boot which floors the former champion. Meng then mounts Sting and starts pounding away before Sting reverses the momentum and gets on top of Meng. Eventually the duo roll to the outside and start going at it as Bischoff says we have our last commercial break coming up and to stick with the action!

As we return Meng has Sting in a sleeper hold as we see highlights of the break where Meng distracted the referee and The Barbarian battered Sting on the outside and drove him into the steel steps. Meng has got Sting on the ground now in the sleeper but the face painted competitor powers up to his feet and bounces off the corner into a pin on Meng: one…two…NO! The big Tongan kicks out. Sting looks like he’s on the comeback now as he decks Meng with a series of clotheslines before whipping him into the corner and going for a Stinger splash but Meng counters with a chop right to Sting’s throat! The Stinger collapses to his knees coughing which gives Meng a chance to run at him with a big boot to the face that floors his opponent. With Sting on the mat Meng continues to focus on attacking on the throat as he stomps away at Sting while Barbarian looks on impressed at ringside. Bischoff also announces during this match that next week Barbarian will go one on one with Hawk on Nitro as Meng rams Sting into the corner and then chokes him out with his foot. Meng goes for a belly to belly, Sting tries to get out of it with a headbutt but Meng just laughs, headbutts Sting back twice as hard and then delivers the suplex. Meng covers: one…two…NO!

Sting kicks out but the relentless Tongan wastes no time and starts chopping Sting in the throat over and over again! Sting looks to be in deep water here as Meng signals and locks in the Tongan death grip! He has it synched in and Sting is fading here as he falls to his knees. The referee checks Sting’s arm once, it drops, he checks it again, it drops and for the final time Sting’s arm is raised - but there’s still life in the Stinger as the crowd roars in approval! He rises to his feet as Meng tries to synch in the hold harder but Sting starts hammering away at Meng’s skull until he has no choice but to break it! Sting then scoop slams Meng, but the big Tongan gets up only to be whipped into the corner and hit with a Stinger splash! Meng staggers out of the corner and Sting decks him with a lariat before he climbs the ropes! Barbarian looks to be getting involved here and knocks Sting over but LEX LUGER emerges from the back and wipes Barbarian off the apron and encourages his best friend! This gives Meng a chance however to recover and he gets on the second rope and delivers a huge throw to Sting sending him hurtling from the top rope to the canvas! Luger is still cheering his pal on but it's not looking good as Meng looks to lock in the Tongan death grip once more! Sting however counters with a kick to the gut and then small packages Meng! One…two…three!

Winner in 13 minutes (including commercials) Sting

Sting does it! He beats Meng but the big Tongan is not happy about it and he takes Sting down with a thrust kick! Barbarian then gets back in the ring to join the beatdown but Luger swings back into action to level the odds and goes back and the duos go back and forth. Hawk then emerges from the back armed with a steel chair and he swings wildly and clatters Meng before he and Barbarian start brawling through the crowd, ahead of their encounter next week. The referee finally raises Sting’s hand in the ring and Luger raises his other as the crowd celebrates The Stinger’s victory.

Luger and Sting then hug in the ring and continue to grandstand for the fans but these celebrations are cut short when ARN ANDERSON and BRIAN PILLMAN emerge at the top of the ramp. The newly christened Apocalypse then charge down to ringside and go nose to nose with Sting and Luger before Pillman slaps Luger and an all out brawl breaks out! Sting and Arn Anderson go at it in the ring while Pillman and Luger tumble to the outside and start exchanging shots. Doug Dillenger and the security boys have finally seen enough and a whole hoard of security heads down to ringside to separate the four wrestlers but much to the delight of the crowd all four men start taking down the security and then go back to beating each other! Bischoff screams basically down the mic that WCW Management have confirmed to him that these four will face off in a blockbuster tag title match live next week as extra security comes down to try and calm this situation down! Nitro ends in chaos with the four men being separated as Bischoff hypes up next week.

WCW Halloween Havoc 1995 - October 29, 1995

I've not had the pleasure of dipping into this, but as someone who has worked from 1995 through to 1999 WCW over the last two years, I'm quite eager to see what you have to offer.

I always struggled to book long-term for World Championship Wrestling, probably due to the conceptual headache of whether Hollywood Hogan or Kevin Nash and Scott Hall would lie down for undercard guys with true upside and potential. I'm sure that's not as much a concern for you, so I'll be curious where we go. Of course, you're still a way off from a potential New World Order incoming, should you even go that route.

Bit of a styles clash in this first match, but it reads like something WCW might book. Sabu's time was so brisk in this company it's funny. I was surprised with it being in Detroit that we didn't see him bring The Sheik in. Mr. JL stuck out like a sore thumb though, and he's still a few years from becoming The New F'N Show. The right team won if the idea is to make Sabu and JL a prosperous tag team, otherwise I'm surprised as The Nasty Boys are normally a protected team in the division.

Eddie Guerrero defeating Diamond Dallas Page frees Page up from the WCW World Television Championship picture, and elevates him to new heights. Eddie is still pretty new to the company at this time, too. I like the idea of Eddie being a fighting young champion. The post-match interview was a nice touch.

What probably wasn't a nice touch was Road Warrior Hawk working with Meng for nine minutes. The Barbarian coming in just made sense to me, and I would envision this will pave the way for Road Warrior Animal's return for a good old fashioned tag feud. Was Barbarian really gone during this stretch of time?

Cute creative liberty taken with Chris Benoit and Dean Malenko's team name. Malenko was pretty much pushed from the day he came in in the to-be-established Cruiserweight Division. It's a game changer to have two small guys go over Harlem Heat for the WCW World Tag Team Championship, especially with them being so new to the company. They were truly pushed to the moon. I'm not opposed, and it should help the match quality of this division - I just wonder what they have coming up for them as champions. At this stage of the game, they are better off as a tandem.

Great out to keep Randy Savage strong against Brian Pillman, who has started his Loose Cannon persona somewhat early. This did what it needed to, and really is a true turning point of the product with a lot of creative license taken. A lot of young guys winning matches on Halloween Havoc.

I'm glad that The Giant and Vader's match was kept relatively short. It sounded like it all built to the big Chokeslam spot on the 450-pounder. Again we see it's out with the old guard and in with the new. Not a bad shout, especially with Giant's being a literally green giant. He did astronomically well on top in 1996 compared to say, Great Khali in 2006.

I'm not too keen on the idea of a Triangle match in 1995, as I recall watching the snoozefest that was the WCW World Heavyweight Championship Triangle match from Starrcade 1995. At least this adopted the rules we've come to expect from these kinds of matches. I was surprised to see Arn Anderson win the WCW United States Heavyweight Championship, but with Brian Pillman's inclusion it's not that surprising. I did like Pillman whacking Ric Flair to set up a feud there, though it does somewhat leave Sting hanging in lieu now. Anderson and Pillman in cohoots looks to set up a new Four Horsemen perhaps, without Flair. I wonder how long we go until Flair stabs Sting in the back.

I wasn't surprised whatsoever to see Hulk Hogan retain the WCW World Heavyweight Championship against Lex Luger. Luger did awfully well in 1996 and went on to become one of the top faces in the next few years. I think after the way the first Nitro went down, this should have been the key angle for this show, so it was very well done in that regard. I was surprised at how clean the finish was. You have to wonder what comes next with no visible hook for the top title picture, other than the build for World War 3 next month.

Some deviations from the angles of the time. I think we'll truly get a feel for where you're taking things with World War 3 next month. The ushering in of apparent new blood certainly is a promising sign of things to come. Who can beat Hogan?

WCW Nitro #10 6th November 1995
Live from the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Coliseum, Florida

“It's Monday, it's the best wrestling in the world, and it is live on TNT! Welcome to WCW Monday Nitro!” Eric Bischoff yells after the iconic Nitro intro. Eric is joined as ever by Bobby ‘The Brain’ Heenan who is in good form tonight. The announcers run down the card for this evening which features a blockbuster main event between the Apocalypse duo of Brian Pillman and Arn Anderson vs Sting and Lex Luger. Plus Barbarian makes his return to WCW against Hawk, Vader and The Giant are in the building and more participants will be revealed for the World War Three match! But right now Dave Penzer is standing by in the ring ready for our first bout!

WCW TV Championship: Eddie Guerrero © vs Max Muscle (with Diamond Dallas Page and The Diamond Doll)

Out first comes the imposing Max Muscle, flanked by the cigar smoking DDP and the lovely Diamond Doll. Muscle is under a lot of pressure here as he cost his employer DDP the title, albeit inadvertently, at Halloween Havoc. Muscle gets in the ring and looks menacing as the music of the TV Champion hits and Eddie Guerrero receives a warm welcome from the Florida crowd. Eddie has already had one successful title defence, beating Lord Steven Regal last week. Guerrero gets in the ring and this David vs Goliath match is underway. Muscle swings for Eddie right off the bat but the champ instinctively ducks, bounces off the ropes and tries for a running arm drag but but Muscle haults the momentum, picks Eddie up and goes for a running powerslam - but Eddie drops behind his opponent. Guerrero then tries for an ambitious German suplex but Muscle counters with a back elbow before whipping Eddie hard into the corner. He then charges into the corner with a big boot but Eddie ducks and Max gets tied up in the corner. Guerrero then springboards and twists into a clothesline that decks his opponent, sending Muscle into the canvas. Eddie then goes to the top rope as Muscle staggers to his feet and the champ goes for a diving crossbody but Max catches him and turns it into a fall away slam! Muscle covers: one…two…NO!

Guerrero kicks out but he’s firmly on the ropes now. Muscle then tosses Eddie to the outside and with the Diamond Doll conveniently distracting the referee DDP uses this opportunity to get some cheap shots in on Eddie. Max then heads to the outside as well and goes to whip Guerrero into the steel steps but Eddie counters and reverses the momentum sending Max straight into DDP! Page is fuming but he’s got no time to think about anything as Eddie springs off the ropes going for a moonsault to the outside and takes out both Muscle and Page as the crowd goes crazy for the TV Champ. The Diamond Doll then approaches Eddie and he has to resist turning on that latino heat because Muscle uses the slight hesitation to recover and clobber Guerrero from behind. He then hauls the champion back into the ring to avert a count out. Muscle then gets back in the ring and floors the staggering Guerrero with a big boot before grabbing Eddie and executing the running powerslam he tried at the start of the match. Muscle then covers: one…two…NO! Guerrero manages to kick out as Muscle then tries for a powerbomb but Eddie counters into a hurricanrana straight into the cover: one…two…NO! Muscle flings Eddie off him with the kick out but he is soon floored again as Eddie bounces off the ropes and spikes Muscle with a springboard DDT! DDP is raging on the outside as Guerrero climbs to the top rope and delivers a perfect frog splash. The cover: one…two…three!

Winner in seven minutes and still WCW TV Champion, Eddie Guerrero

Eddie wins but as the belt is about to be handed to the referee DDP swindles it, darts in the ring and nails Guerrero in the back of the head! Page then stomps on Eddie a few more times before picking him and dropping Eddie with a Diamond Cutter! Dallas then grabs a mic and says: “First of all I need you Floridian jackoffs to shut the hell up when I’m conducting my business!” Naturally lots of boos for this line as Page continues: “Now speaking of business, in this industry you have to make tough decisions and I’m afraid Max Muscle after that performance tonight the Diamond Mine will no longer be requiring your services.” With that Page drops the groggy Muscle with a Diamond Cutter! Page shoves Max aside and continues: “And finally Eddie I’ve had a word with WCW management and the contract I signed with them states that I get an automatic championship rematch so I’ll see your sorry behind at World War Three!” With that Page holds the TV belt above his head before dropping it and the mic on top of Guerrero. He heads to the back with The Diamond Doll in tow as we cut to commercial.

Vader is still standing

Back from the break and the man they call Vader is storming to the ring! There’s no Mean Gene in situ for an interview, Vader has decided of his own accord to come to the ring and get something off his chest. He snatches the mic out of Dave Penzer’s hands and gets in the ring to a good pop. “Guess what Giant!” Vader bellows. “I’m still standing! At Halloween Havoc you gave me one hell of a beating but you can’t keep a mastodon down so guess what punk - I’m ready for round two right here, right now in Jacksonville and I promise you I will be the last man standing.” Vader is dressed in his gear and gestured for Giant to come down to the ring. The big man does emerge but remains planted on the top of the stage.

Giant then says: “At Halloween Havoc Vader, I embarrassed you in my first ever match and I’m only going to get bigger and badder and better! You talk about last man standing, well we can fight to a knockout if you want but it will be on my terms. So not tonight but on Nitro - next week!” The fans of course boo that they are not seeing the match right now but Vader quickly retorts: “Fine big man have it your way - the official match can be next week - but I’m still gonna lay a beating on you right now!” With that Vader drops the mic and charges down the ramp, here we go! The two big behemoths are swinging at each other back and forth as Heenan proclaims its like Godzilla vs King Kong as the army of security flood the arena but these poor men are swatted aside easily by the big giants.

Giant makes his way towards Vader and grabs him by the throat and looks to chokeslam him on the stage but Vader reverses the move with a kick to the gut. The pair start brawling towards the announcer’s position to the side of the ramp and Bischoff and Heenan wisely move away from the desk as more security attempt to break these two giants up to no avail. Vader then tries to powerbomb The Giant through the announce table but he can’t haul his masked foe up. Giant tries to counter with a backdrop but he too can’t haul his opponent over his shoulder. Vader then just says screw it and charges at Giant, propped up against the announce table, and drives himself and his foe through the table which basically causes the whole thing to explode and finally level both big men. The pair of giants are laid out and finally security can come in and separate the foes. Bischoff grabs one of the headsets, which miraculously still works and throws it to a video package about World War Three.

More World War Three entrants revealed

We cut to a quick video package announcing more WW3 competitors alongside Lex Luger, The Giant and Vader. Just announced for the match are all the other champions in WCW: US Champion Arn Anderson, TV Champion Eddie Guerrero and Tag Team Champions Chris Benoit and Dean Malenko. That’s not all though because Sting and Brian Pillman have also just been confirmed for the 30 man battle royale which will see the winner challenge Hulk Hogan at Starrcade.

A radical challenge

Following that video we cut to two of the new entrants into World War Three, WCW Tag Team Champions Dean Malenko and Chris Benoit. The Radicals are backstage with Mean Gene Okerlund who first asks about their entry into World War Three. Benoit says: “Its real simple Gene from day one since we came to WCW we’ve been saying that we’re the best wrestlers in the business. Now we’ve already proved that when it comes to tag team wrestling by winning these championships but we’ll prove its true in singles competition too when the battle royale comes down to myself and Malenko. Then it’ll be whoever the best man is on the night will be taking the WCW Championship from Hulk Hogan at Starrcade.”

Gene then asks about the whole business with Malenko using Harlem Heat’s manager Sister Sherri as a human shield at Halloween Havoc. Okerlund calls these tactics underhanded by Dean responds: “Listen Gene and all the fans out there who’ve been giving us grief what was the mantra Benoit just laid out - we are the best wrestlers in the business. Now that means every aspect of the game not just technical but mentally too. Sherri was a weakness for Harlem Heat and like if Booker had an injured leg or Stevie Ray an injured neck, we exploited it.”

Finally Okerlund asks about their other match at WW3 defending their tag titles against Sabu and Mr JL. Benoit takes this one: “Sabu and JL, not only are you not as good as a team as The Radicals but individually we are better too. So I’m laying out a challenge right here, right now. Next week on Nitro me and you Sabu, the following week Malenko beats you Mr JL and then at World War Three you lose as a collective.” Benoit and Malenko then leave the frame as in the background Anderson and Pillman look to be watching on…

Road Warrior Hawk vs The Barbarian

We’re back on TNT with our next match as Bischoff and Heenan are using a makeshift announce table after Vader and The Giant exploded the old one. As a replay of the incident is shown Bischoff reveals that both men have been carted out of the arena following the incident. The Faces of Fear are out first for this bout as Meng and The Barbarian make their way down the aisle. If you thought the chaos was over though you’ve got another thing coming because from behind Hawk attacks both his foes with a steel chair! He slams Meng in the back first and then strikes Barbarian! Thinking on his feet Hawk then throws Meng over the barricade and into the front row and then starts focusing on Barbarian. Referee Nick Patrick is trying to get the pair back in the ring but Barbarian isn’t having any of it and he then clotheslines Hawk over the opposite barricade and gives chase! Hawk and Barbarian then start brawling in the crowd as Meng begins to stir on the other side of the arena. The fans hand Hawk a beer and he throws it in Barbarian’s face before attempting to piledriver Barbarian on the concrete steps leading up the arena. Before he can do this however Meng sneaks up from behind and chops Hawk in the back of the head before locking in the Tongan death grip! With Hawk in the grip Barbarian starts clubbing the back of Hawk as the road warrior is fading now, practically unconscious from the submission. Barbarian then grabs Hawk and himself and Meng hit him with a double powerbomb on the concrete floor! Barbarian then gets back in the ring and threatens Nick Patrick demanding he rings the bell and counts. Patrick reluctantly obliges and of course there’s no getting up from that for Hawk so after the ten count Barbarian is declared the winner.

Winner in 20 seconds (four minutes including pre match), The Barbarian

The Faces of Fear laugh as Barbarian is declared victor while medics help Hawk up from the crowd and take him to the back. Bischoff and Heenan react to replays of the brutal move before recapping Hulk Hogan’s words to Japanese manager Sonny Onoo last week. He called out any of Sonny’s wrestlers to take him on next week on Nitro and now Mr Onoo has a response for Hulk Hogan in the form of a video.

“Typical American arrogance from the so-called champion of the world Hulk Hogan!” Onoo says. “You may think you are the best in the business Hulk Hogan but I know multiple Japanese talents that could teach you a lesson inside the ring. So next week Kensuke Sasaki, the fearsome competitor from New Japan Pro Wrestling will take you on and show you to be the fraud we all know you are!” Following those words from Onoo we see highlights of Sasaki in action narrated by the Professor Mike Tenay who says he poses a serious challenge for Hulk Hogan and his WCW Championship next week on Nitro.

We then cut back to the announcers and Heenan is perturbed about the makeshift table he’s having to use. Before the blockbuster tag team main event Bischoff runs down what to expect next week on Nitro. Hulk Hogan defends his WCW Championship against Japanese sensation Kensuke Sasaki and just announced The Giant and Vader will square off in a last man standing match. With that it is now time for the main event!

The Apocalypse (Brian Pillman and Arn Anderson) vs Sting and Lex Luger

The dastardly Apocalypse are out first as Bischoff recounts what these two have been up to in the past couple of weeks. Firstly, Pillman going on an injuring spree and defeating Randy Savage at Halloween Havoc while Arn turned his back and injured his supposed best friend in Ric Flair. Anderson also won the United States Championship in the midst of all this and faces Sting at World War Three. Speaking of the stinger he makes his way down to ringside with Lex Luger by side as the fans pop for both of these competitors. Looks like Sting and Pillman are starting this bout and official Randy Anderson rings the bell to get this bout started. Pillman and Sting lock up but the former US champ has the power advantage and Brian back into the corner but Arn isn’t messing around in this bout and he immediately jumps in and starts hammering away on Sting! Anderson and Pillman then Irish whip Sting to go for a double team but here comes Lex Luger who takes both men out with a double clothesline! The Apocalypse go outside to regroup as Sting and Luger pose in the ring as Bischoff says this will be our last break of the evening and to stick with Nitro on TNT!

As we come back Sting is being worked over in the ring by Double A as we get some footage from the break where Sting gave chase to his foes on the outside but Anderson turned the tables and whipped him into the steel steps. Back in the ring Anderson is working over Sting with some shots to the jaw before grabbing his foe and delivering a vertical suplex. He covers: one…two…NO! Sting kicks out. The referee and Lex Luger then get into a debate which allows Pillman to sneak in and the duo hit a double flapjack onto the top rope to the Stinger which Arn then follows up with a back suplex. Another cover: one…two…NO! Sting is still in this bout but its not looking great for the franchise of WCW. Double A tags in Pillman and the ‘loose cannon’ lives up to his name by just unleashing a flurry of aggressive strikes before punctuating his offence with a drop kick. Pillman then goes for a jumping clothesline but Sting counters with a shoulder block that knocks Brian back. He tries to go for the tag to Luger but Pillman grabs him by the ankle and drags him across the ring. Brian then tags in Anderson and the pair try for a double DDT but Sting counters and backdrops the both of them! He then crawls over to his corner and finally makes the tag to Lex Luger!

Luger comes in like a house on fire, he wipes out Arn, he wipes out Pillman before pumping up the crowd. He scoops the US champion up and plants him down with a big slam before Brian jumps off the top rope with a crossbody! He downs Luger but the total package hangs on to Pillman and in an awesome show of strength he rises to his feet still scooping up Pillman and slams him down to the canvas! Anderson comes back in and tries for the spinebuster but Sting clubs him in the back to break it up. The duo then whip Anderson in the corner and Luger decks Double A with an elbow before Sting follows up with a Stinger splash! The duo are then taken out when Pillman springboards back into the ring and wipes both competitors out with a double clothesline! Pillman then grabs Sting and goes for his hangman’s neck breaker but Luger charges in with a running forearm and goes to hit Pillman but Brian ducks and Lex accidentally nails Sting! Luger then is grabbed by Anderson from behind who nails him in the back of the head and follows up with a gourdbuster as Pillman throws Sting to the outside! Anderson covers: one…two…three?

NO! Luger gets the shoulder up! Anderson cannot believe it and he just starts stomping away at Lex in frustration. He tags Pillman in and they both grab Luger and plant him with a devastating double DDT! Surely that is it! Pillman covers: one…two…three? NO! Sting is back in at the last second to break the cover up! Anderson comes back in and again tries for the spinebuster on Sting but the icon counters with an reverse atomic drop Pillman then goes for the neckbreaker again on the Stinger but its countered into a back slide which Pillman rolls through only for Sting to catch him and whip him into the corner. Sting then goes for the Stinger splash but Pillman pulls the official in the way! Sting then squashes Randy Anderson who then crumples into the canvas and Pillman immediately takes advantage and low blows Sting as the fans boo. With Luger still down Double A then retrieves a chair from ringside and its not looking good for the Stinger. Anderson then plants Sting with a DDT before locking his arm in the chair. Pillman then takes aim to stomp on it but HERE COMES RANDY SAVAGE! The Macho Man hits the ring and wipes out Anderson with a blow to the head before pouncing on Pillman and just starts throwing punches left and right. A groggy Anderson grabs the chair off of Sting’s arm and goes to hit Randy but Savage sees it coming, grabs the chair, wrestles it off Double A and absolutely clocks him with it! Savage then throws the chair and Pillman over the top rope and the duo start brawling up the ramp as Sting has recovered and is on the apron begging Luger for a tag as official Randy Anderson is slowly getting to his feet. The groggy Luger makes the tag to Sting who, seeing Anderson completely knocked out by Savage, heads to the top rope and hits a huge diving splash to the US Champion. Sting covers: one…two…three!

Winners in 18 minutes (including commercials) Sting and Lex Luger

Sting and Luger win! Still dazed from that double DDT Luger gets back in the ring and raises the Stinger’s hand as Anderson is still knocked out cold from that chair shot. Meanwhile security is at the top of the ramp desperately trying to separate Pillman and Savage as Randy screams that he’ll see Pillman in the World War Three match. Nitro goes off the air with the faces standing tall as Bischoff promotes the huge show for next week.

Yes there was a certain women’s wrestler who WCW brought in at this time yet basically had no competition for her - so it’s a good time to start building a division.

WCW Nitro #11 13th November 1995
Taped from the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Coliseum, Florida

It’s a very rare pre-taped Nitro this week but that doesn’t dim Eric Bischoff’s enthusiasm as he bombastically welcomes us to the hottest hour in pro-wrestling, only on TNT. Bobby Heenan is quipping that we could see Hulk Hogan’s record breaking world title reign end here right now because he’s about to take on one of Japan’s fiercest competitors in our opening contest.

WCW Championship: Hulk Hogan © (with Jimmy Hart) vs Kensuke Sasaki (with Sonny Onoo)

Mike Tenay has now also joined the announce booth for this one as Sasaki makes his way out to the ring to a decent amount of boos as Sonny Onoo looks repulsed at the Floridian fans. Tenay notes Sasaki has one of the most dangerous lariats in the world and Hulk needs to watch out for it. Speaking of the WCW Champion he storms his way to the ring with Jimmy Hart by his side and rips his shirt to a good reaction. Referee Nick Patrick raises the world title belt above his head and here we go. Hogan starts punching away at Sasaki but the Japanese competitor is coming back with his own knife edge chops which echo through the Coliseum. Hogan says that doesn’t work for me brother and he cuts Kensuke off with a headbutt before lifting hip for a scoop slam but Sasaki drops behalf, turns Hulk around and scoop slams him himself. He then rolls Hogan outside and whips him against the barrier. He goes for some more knife edge chops but Hogan sidesteps his foe as Sasaki painfully whacks his hand against the barrier. Sonny Onoo then starts antagonising Hulk and the WCW champ goes after him but this allows Sasaki time to recover and he grabs Hulk and whips him face first into the ring post! To add insult to injury Sasaki then grabs poor Jimmy Hart and throws him to the ground. Kensuke then hauls the Hulkster back into the ring.

Back inside the squared circle Sasaki is working over Hogan in the corner and he then whips Hulk incredibly hard into the opposing corner before grabbing him and planting him with a vertical suplex! Sasaki covers: one…two…NO! Hogan kicks out but its all Kensuke here as he grabs Hulk and locks him in a single leg Boston crab. He wrenches back on Hogan, inflicting pain on the champ’s knee and back but there’s no sign of quit in Hogan as he screams ‘no’ to the referee. The Hulkster eventually manages to scratch and claw his way to the bottom rope but Sasaki has done a lot of damage here. As Hulk struggles to his feet Sasaki hooks him and drops him with a beautiful brainbuster! This one could be over: one…two…three? NO! Hogan gets the shoulder up as Sonny Onoo is irate at ringside. Sasaki then sizes up his foe for the lariat and he then charges at Hulk but the champ thinks fast and pulls down the top rope so Sasaki goes tumbling to the outside. Hogan looks like he could be getting his famous second wind here but as soon as he goes to the outside Sasaki hits back with a headbutt and then decks him with a super strong lariat! Hogan looks lifeless on the outside and it takes a lot of strength for Sasaki to haul Hogan up and bring him into the ring. Kensuke then covers: one…two…three?

NO! The Hulkster is still in this one! Onoo cannot believe it as Sasaki berates the referee! He hooks Hulk for a Northern Lights bomb but Hogan isn’t taking that one brother and he pushes him back into the ropes and on the rebound he decks Sasaki with a big boot! Onoo then gets on the apron fearing the worst but Hulk sees him and decks him with a stiff punch. Hulk turns around however and nearly walks into another lariat but Hogan ducks, bounces off the ropes and again tries for the big boot but this time Sasaki ducks, grabs Hulk from behind and tries for a back suplex but Hogan counters with an elbow to the face before whipping Sasaki into the corner. Hogan then looks to the crowd who roar in approval as he mounts Kensuke and delivers ten devastating punches in the corner. Hulk then grabs the dazed Sasaki and plants him with a scoop slam! He signals for the leg drop and goes to bounce off the ropes but Onoo is getting back on the apron - only this time to be foiled by the returning Jimmy Hart! Hogan then hits the ropes, hits the big leg and covers: one…two…three!

Winner in 10 minutes and still WCW Champion, Hulk Hogan

Hogan wins as Jimmy Hart grabs the belt and hands his friend the golden title. Hulk celebrates triumphantly as a dejected Sasaki and Onoo slink away as we head to commercial.

More World War Three Entrants confirmed

As we return to Nitro Tony Schiavone is narrating a video package which is highlighting the World War Three matchup that takes place in 13 days time at the PPV of the same name. In definitely not a straight rip off of the Royal Rumble the match will feature 30 WCW wrestlers who will enter at regular intervals with throwing your opponent over the top rope the only way to eliminate them. Nine men have already been announced for the bout, which guarantees a title shot against Hulk Hogan at Starrcade, but Schiavone is here to announce a whole host more names. They include: TV Champion Eddie Guerrero and a number of tag teams who may have to face off with each other in the bout. The teams confirmed include: Harlem Heat, The Nasty Boys, The Blue Bloods and #1 contenders Sabu and Mr JL. This means we have 18 names confirmed for the match and more will be revealed next week on Nitro

Eddie Guerrero lays down a challenge

In a new interview format for Nitro ‘Mean’ Gene Okerlund is at the top of the stage and he introduces the WCW TV Champion Eddie Guerrero. Eddie gets a decent pop as his music plays and Gene welcomes him to Jacksonville. Gene first asks Eddie about his entry into the World War Three match. Eddie replies: “I am proud and committed to defending this TV Championship against whoever, whenever man but the dream of every aspiring pro wrestler is to become the WCW Champion. So if I have to throw 29 other men over the top rope to have that shot against Hulk Hogan and achieve my dream then that’s what I have to do.”

Gene then moves on to Eddie’s singles match at the PPV when he faces DDP in a rematch from Halloween Havoc. Gene asks Eddie about his thoughts going into the bout: “Beating Page last month and winning this WCW Television Championship has been the highlight of my career Gene but I’m not gonna let that good work go to waste esse! Dallas you were a bad champion who weaselled out of every defence you could and I’m not letting this belt go back to that place. In fact I’ve already told WCW management that I’m having an open challenge next week on Nitro because I am the most fighting champion in all of WCW.”

As Eddie says this Big Bubba Rogers appears from nowhere and absolutely batters Guerrero with a lead pipe right to the back of the neck. He then picks up Eddie and gives him a powerslam right on the stage as Mean Gene retreats from the stage horrified. DDP then emerges from the back with a wad of cash! He hands it to Big Bubba who tells Eddie he’ll see him next week as it looks like DDP has paid off the big man to soften Guerrero up prior to World War Three. Eddie is being attended to by medics as Nitro rolls on with our next matchup.

Chris Benoit vs Sabu

A preview of our tag title match at World War Three is up next as one half of The Radicals and the WCW Tag Team Champions, Chris Benoit is out to the ring first. Bischoff lets us know on commentary that for both this match and the Malenko vs JL match next week their respective partners have been banned from ringside. Benoit looks focused as ever as the enigmatic Sabu makes his way down the aisle. Wasting no motion of course rather than getting in the ring Sabu springboard clotheslines himself into the squared circle and decks Benoit! Micky Jay rings the bell and we are underway. A stunned Benoit gets back to his feet only to be taken out with a drop kick again by Sabu as the tag champ then chooses to roll to the outside to take a breather. Sabu isn’t letting him off that easily however and he dives through the ropes and takes the crippler out with a suicide dive! The fans are loving Sabu here and he then gets on the barricade and goes for some kind of diving leg drop but Benoit rolls out of the way and Sabu hits the concrete hard! Benoit then rolls his foe back in the ring as Bischoff tells us Nitro needs to take a break but this match will continue after the commercials.

We’re back from break and it’s been all Benoit through the commercials as he’s been systematically working Sabu over. Benoit tries for the crossface but Sabu counters into a rollup: one…NO! Quick kick out from Benoit who then grabs Sabu from behind and executes a picture perfect bridging German suplex! One…two…NO! Sabu gets the shoulder up but it's not looking good for him here. Chris then tries for a Northern Lights suplex but Sabu pushes Benoit into the ropes and tries to go for a hurricanrana but Chris counters into a powerbomb. He covers: one…two…NO! Sabu again manages to get the shoulder up at the last minute. Benoit then grabs Sabu in waist lock and goes for a release German suplex but Sabu lands on his feet and just decks Chris with a clothesline from behind. He then grabs Benoit and plants him with a tornado DDT! He covers: one…two..NO! Benoit kicks out. Sabu then goes for his split legged Arabian press moonsault but Benoit gets the knees up! He then grabs Sabu and hits a bridging Northern Lights suplex! One…two…three?

NO! Sabu somehow kicks out despite all the punishment he has taken throughout this contest. Benoit is getting frustrated now and he finally manages to lock in the crippler crossface! Sabu is squirming now, desperate to get out of the hold as Benoit wrenches back, trying to get Sabu to give up but somehow, someway the enigmatic challenger gets to the ropes. Benoit is frustrated and tries to pull Sabu away from the ropes but he gets a double boot to the face for his troubles followed by Sabu springboarding off the ropes and nailing Chris in the face with a back elbow! Sabu wastes no time and then hits a jumping DDT which spikes Benoit right into the mat. He then follows up with a successful Arabian press moonsault and covers! One…two…three….NO! Benoit gets his foot on the rope! Sabu cannot believe it and in a rage he goes to the outside and grabs a chair! He whips Benoit into the corner and places a chair over him but the ref is not having any of it and takes the chair away. Sabu is fuming but as the referee turns his back and dumps the chair to the outside Benoit hits his foe with a low blow! The fans boo as Heenan praises the dirty tactics as Benoit follows up the blow with a brainbuster! He then heads to the top rope and hits the diving headbutt! One…two…three!

[ISPOILER]Winner in 12 minutes (including commercials) Chris Benoit [/ISPOILER]

Benoit has stolen a victory here thanks to the distraction as he takes his half of the World Tag Team Championship and hightails it out of the arena as a fuming Sabu comes to and storms down the ramp looking as maniacal as ever.

Sting and Lex Luger are ready for war

We then cut to the top of the ramp where Mean Gene is in his new interview position and he introduces two of WCW’s most popular stars Lex Luger and Sting! The super team comes out to a big pop from the crowd as Gene applauds the two fan favourites. After some hot dogging to the fans Gene congratulates them on their tag team victory against The Apocalypse last week before turning attention to World War Three. Sting challenges Arn Anderson for the WCW United States Championship on the PPV and Gene asks for Sting’s thoughts. Sting says: “Well Gene I already proved last week that I’ve got Double A’s number and while he and Pillman may be a terrific combination nothing is as powerful as the franchise of WCW with his best friend and all the little stingers here in Jacksonville and across the world by his side. So at World War Three it’ll be Arn Anderson who will be facing an apocalypse!”

Gene then turns to Luger. Okerlund astutely points out Sting was on the end of some friendly fire in the tag match last week, just as Hulk Hogan has been in the past and how will both men co-exist in the World War Three match. Luger responds: “I’m not sure I appreciate this pot stirring Gene but let me say this at World War Three Sting and I are on the same page: we’re gonna give it our all until it's me and him in the final two and then the best man will win!”

“What a load of crap!”
Boos ring out as Arn Anderson comes out with Brian Pillman by his side. The US Champ continues: “You know your friendship is just like Ric Flair - easily breakable! You think Sting, Luger won’t just turn on you the first chance he gets. You see Lex you ain’t like Sting you’re no idiot, in fact in a way you’re like Double A and the Loose Cannon. You’re an opportunist who will do whatever it takes to win. He doesn’t care about you Sting!” With that Luger has heard enough and he attacks Anderson and here we go. Its a two on two brawl on the ramp that the Apocalypse have an advantage in until Randy Savage, with Road Warrior Hawk as backup storm down the ramp and now its advantage babyfaces! This is four fifths of a War Games team from Fall Brawl a few months back but the odds are quickly evened when Meng and The Barbarian, The Faces of Fear come out and we have an eight man brawl here on Nitro! Barbarian in particular is going after Hawk but Bischoff says we will try and restore order here because our main event of The Giant vs Vader in a last man standing match is next!

Last Man Standing: The Giant vs Vader

As we return ‘The Mastodon’ Vader is making his entrance as Eric Bischoff reveals we have a huge eight man tag team match signed for next week as The Faces of Fear and The Apocalypse team up to face Sting, Lex Luger, Randy Savage and Hawk. Vader poses in the ring and looks ready for war as The Giant makes his way out. Heenan reminds everyone that the only way to win this bout is to knock your opponent out for a 10 count. Giant is in the ring and here we go the Nitro main event is underway! Vader starts with just unloading some shots on the Giant and attempts to suplex the big man but Giant easily pushes him away and decks his masked opponent with a big boot. This sends Vader staggering back into the corner and Giant follows up with some big elbows to the face of Vader before grabbing him and throwing his well over 300 pound opponent across the ring! Vader then rolls to the outside as Giant poses in the ring, as the fans boo the big man. Giant then clambers through the ropes to continue the onslaught but Vader whacks him in the head with a steel chair he’s grabbed! There’s no disqualifications in this one! Giant then slumps down on the apron and Vader just starts unloading with the chair until Giant punches the chair back in Vader’s face! The big man is angry now as he whips Vader hard into the guard rail. Giant executes a few big chops to Vader’s chest before lining up to charge at his foe. He goes for a spear but Vader moves out of the way and Giant spears himself through the barricade! The fans can’t believe it as Vader gets the referee to start counting: one…two…three…four…five…six….seven - and The Giant rises back to his feet, the match will continue!

Vader then grabs the steel steps and goes to try and take Giant’s head off but his foe grabs him by his throat and Vader drops the steel steps. Giant then hauls Vader up for a chokeslam on the outside but Vader counters and DDTs Giant on the steps! Holy s***! Giant could be out for the count as the referee begins it again: one…two…three…four…five…six…seven…eight - NO! The Giant rises to his feet again despite all the punishment he’s taken! Vader cannot believe it as like frankenstein The Giant is back up. Giant charges at Vader with a running tackle but Vader grabs him, tries a suplex but instead gets hit with a gargantuan headbutt from the big man. Giant then hauls Vader on his shoulder before slamming the masked man back down on the apron like he was nothing and then rolls him in the ring. Giant again seems to call for a chokeslam but Vader counters with a kick to the gut that has the Giant on the ropes and with all his force Vader charges at the Giant with a clothesline which leads to both men tumbling to the floor. Vader is up first and he gets a table out from underneath the ring much to the crowd’s delight as Giant gets up on the apron and tries to get back in the ring but Vader grabs his legs and with the table positioned he powerbombs him from the apron through the table on the outside! Good god! The referee begins the count: one…two…three…four…five…six…seven…eight…nine…ten?

NO! Giant gets to his feet at 9.9 and Vader cannot believe it! Can this monster be stopped? Vader grabs the chair and charges at The Giant on the outside but the big man grabs him by the throat and delivers a chokeslam on the outside! It could be over. Giant retreats back into the ring as the referee again begins the count: one…two…three…four…five…six…seven…eight…nine…NO! Vader gets back to his feet! He gets back in the ring and Giant goes for clothesline but Vader grabs him and finally manages to lift the big man off his feet with a suplex! Vader is feeling it now and he heads to the top rope and looks to be going for his signature moonsault. He goes for the move but nobody is home as Giant has rolled out of the way! Both men then stagger to their feet and Giant grabs Vader and CHOKESLAMS HIM THROUGH THE RING! WHAT THE F***! Vader literally goes through the ring as the ref, announcers and fans alike cannot believe what they have seen. Giant gets to his feet as the count begins: one…two…three…four…five…six…seven…eight…nine…ten!

Winner in 11 minutes, The Giant

What have we just witnessed? Medics pour into the ring to check in the huge hole in the ring that Vader was sent through that the mastodon is ok while Giant poses in the ring as the fans are losing their minds. WCW Nitro #12 20th November 1995
Live from the Macon Coliseum, Georgia

Nitro is on the air and we are just six days away from the first ever World War Three pay per view. Eric Bischoff and Bobby Heenan are with us as always and they hype the huge main event we have tonight as Sting, Lex Luger, Randy Savage and Road Warrior Hawk take on the US Champ Arn Anderson, Brian Pillman and The Faces of Fear. We are getting straight into the action here on Monday Nitro with our opening contest.

Mr JL vs Dean Malenko

JL and Sabu face the WCW Tag Team Champions at World War Three and Benoit managed to defeat Sabu last week. The masked Mr JL makes his way down the aisle and just like last week both of their respective tag partners are banned from ringside. The straight-laced Malenko then comes down to the ring next with the WCW tag belt around his waist. The iceman looks as serious as ever as the bell rings to get this one underway. The duo lock up and Malenko gets the advantage and has a side headlock on before JL wriggles out and gets Dean in a waist lock. JL tries for a German suplex but gets an elbow to the face for his troubles and Malenko goes back to the side headlock and takes his foe down to the mat. He wrenches in the hold but JL uses his legs and turns the momentum and locks in a body scissors. Dean then counters with a simple elbow to the legs of his opponent before launching JL into the ropes. He goes for a lariat but JL counters and hits his foe with a tilt-a-whirl headscissors that impresses the audience. Malenko gets to his feet only to be taken out with a drop kick before JL heads to the top rope. The masked wrestler goes for a flying cross body but Malenko catches him and transitions into a back breaker! Malenko covers: one…two…NO!

JL kicks out but it was very close there. Malenko then slaps on a chin lock while using his knee to ram into the back of his foe, clearly choosing the area of attack. JL eventually manages to break the hold and tries for a vertical suplex but his back gives out and Dean hits a vertical suplex of his own! Malenko follows up with a bridging Northern Lights suplex right into the pin: one…two…NO! JL kicks out. Malenko then stomps on the back a few more times before ramming JL hard into the corner. He turns his opponent around and goes for a running drop kick to this back but this time JL gets out of the way! Malenko crashes and burns as JL is on the apron and he hits a slingshot crossbody straight into the cover: one…two…NO! Malenko gets the shoulder up. JL then tries to set up for some kind of pile driver but Dean counters with a back body drop that has a nasty landing for JL. Malenko then grabs his opponent’s legs and locks in the Texas Cloverleaf! He really wrenches back on the hold and JL looks like he’s in a world of hurt but somehow, someway he manages to crawl to the ropes and break the hold. Malenko wastes no time in locking in a waist lock and goes for the overhead German suplex but JL lands on his feet! Maleko then turns round and is nailed with an enziguri from his opponent. JL then heads to the top rope and delivers a moonsault to Malenko! The cover: one…two…NO! Dean gets the shoulder up! JL then heads up top again and tries for a diving leg drop but there’s nobody home and Dean moves out of the way! Malenko then hooks JL, tries for the running powerbomb but JL counters with a hurricanrana straight into the pin: one…two…three!

Winner in eight minutes, Mr JL

A big win and a huge momentum shift for the challengers heading into their match on Sunday! Referee Randy Anderson raises JL’s hand but its not for long because here comes Chris Benoit, armed with a tire iron! He thwacks JL in the back of the head with it and now Malenko is back up and the two lay a beating on JL. This too is short lived however as Sabu is here and he’s armed with a steel chair! He swings it like crazy and whacks Malenko in the back before Benoit makes the wise choice to bail, throwing his weapon under the ring. Nitro heads to break with these two teams poised to face off at World War Three.

Sonny Onoo launches the Women's Division

We see clips of some impressive women’s wrestling from Japan before we cut to Sonny Onoo who has a message for the WCW audience. "Not only are the best men’s wrestlers in the world from Japan, as Kensuke Sasaki showed last week so much so that the great Hulk Hogan had to cheat to beat him, but so are the best women’s wrestlers!” We see more clips of the action as Onoo continue: “So this Sunday at World War Three I, Sonny Onoo, am bringing you a match that will change how you even view wrestling! Because the top two talents in Japan, Akira Hokuto and Bull Nakano will be squaring off live on PPV and then you will see why Japan is truly the greatest wrestling nation on earth.” We see some more highlights of Nakano and Hokuto as we cut back to the arena.

WCW Television Championship: Eddie Guerrero © vs Big Bubba Rogers

Big Bubba Rogers is making his way down the aisle and has been paid off by Guerrero’s challenge at the PPV, Diamond Dallas Page, to specifically soften up Eddie for the bout. So for Bubba its not about the title as much as its about inflicting pain. Guerrero is out next and is outweighed by his opponent by over 100 pounds. Guerrero hands over the title belt as we then pan up to a skybox where DDP is sitting alongside the Diamond Doll, smoking a cigar. The bell rings and here we go. Rogers charges out of the gates and turns Eddie inside out with a lariat! Bubba then tries for a running powerslam but Eddie counters, slips out of the hold and goes to springboard off the ropes with a cross body only to be flattened by an elbow strike. Rogers follows up by throwing Eddie to the outside. On the outside Rogers then whips Guerrero hard into the steps as DDP is all smiles when the camera pans to him. Big Bubba then tries to dump Eddie over the guardrail but Eddie counters with a beautiful tilt a whirl arm drag. The TV Champ then hits a lovely springboard moonsault to the outside that wipes both him and Rogers out. The referee’s count is getting higher and both men manage to scramble back through the ropes before the ten count.

In the ring Eddie gets a head of steam going with a number of chops to Bubba before whipping him into the corner. Eddie then goes for a monkey flip but Rogers counters by throwing him down to the canvas. Bubba then hits Guerrero with a running splash but he doesn’t cover as winning the title is not what he’s in the match for. Bubba then heads to the second rope and goes for a splash off here as he really looks to try and cause damage but Eddie gets his knees up. Guerrero hits Rogers with a running hurricarana and follows up with a springboard dropkick that floors his large opponent. He covers: one…two…NO! Rogers is still in this one. Eddie tries for a vertical suplex but Bubba counters by just throwing him down to the mat. Bubba then flattens Eddie again with a big boot before whipping his foe into the corner. He then charges at the corner but Guerrero gets both his legs up to stop the attack and follows up with a tornado DDT! Eddie covers: one…two…NO! Rogers gets the shoulder up. Eddie then goes to the top but Rogers springs back to life and meets him there. Bubba tries for a belly to belly superplex but Eddie counters and knocks him down to the mat with a big uppercut! Suddenly Rogers is vulnerable on the mat so Eddie dives off the top turnbuckle with his signature frog splash! He covers: one…two…three!

Winner in seven minutes and still WCW Television Champion, Eddie Guerrero

Guerrero survives Big Bubba Rogers. DDP is fuming in the skybox as Eddie celebrates up the ramp with his TV Championship and knowing his next challenger is set for World War Three. We cut back to the announcers who talk through the World War Three card and include some brand new names in the match itself. Diamond Dallas Page, Big Bubba Rogers, Disco Inferno, Alex Wright, Jim Duggan, Scotty Riggs, Marcus Bagwell and The Shark are all now confirmed for the match which leaves four spots open. Bischoff says that viewers will have to tune into the PPV to find out who the last four men are. We then cut to break with WCW Champion Hulk Hogan making an appearance on TV next.

Hogan starts a war

We are back live on TNT and Mean Gene Okerlund is standing on the stage and the veteran interviewer welcomes the immortal Hulk Hogan. ‘American Made’ plays through the arena and the WCW Champion is out posing for the fans who while mostly positive there is a small trace of the boos the Hulkster has started to receive over the last few months. Hogan shakes hands with Gene as Okerulnd asks his first question about his victory over Kensuke Sasaki last week. Hogan says: “Well let me tell ya something Mean Gene in Japan they have some of the best wrestlers alive brother and Sasaki gave me a real fight last week dude. But with the stars and stripes and the power of Hulkamania running through my veins I knew I could beat him and continue my record-setting reign as WCW Champion.”

Gene then follows up by asking Hogan about the 30 man World War Three match taking place this Sunday which will determine his challenger for the biggest show of the year, Starrcade in late December. Gene asks if Hogan is worried about any of the challengers that could come win that match. “Listen Gene World War Three is going to be one of the biggest events of all time and you know that I’m gonna have my eye on that battle royale brother. Whether its people I respect like Randy Savage and Sting or some of the nastiest WCW has to offer like Anderson and Pillman I am ready for Starrcade no matter who wins!”

“You seem to be forgetting someone, Hogan!”
A large voice booms as The Giant emerges from the back. “Your biggest threat right now is staring you in the face literally and figuratively! I’m coming for that title Hogan and nobody can stop me!” Giant then squares up to Hogan but before Hulk has the chance to respond US Champion Arn Anderson and Brian Pillman then make their way onto the stage. Pillman says: "You know being called nasty you Hogan might be the only thing I’ve ever agreed with you on because you’re damn right we’re the toughest WCW has to offer. Now no disrespect Giant but even though I believe it’ll be myself or Double A who wins the World War Three match there is one thing we can agree on: Hulk Hogan deserves a beating!”

With that Anderson clocks Hogan from behind and it's an impromptu three on one beat down on the WCW champ as The Giant is more than happy to go along with The Apocalypse’s plan. The beating doesn’t last for too long however as here comes the cavalry as Sting, Randy Savage and Hawk enter the fray and start brawling with their rivals. The odds are firmly in the good guys favour until Meng and The Barbarian emerge and The Faces of Fear start aggressively beating down the crowd favourites. Better late than never Lex Luger appears and absolutely floors Meng with a forearm before getting stuck in a scrap with Brian Pillman. Security then come down to the stage and separate all these men as Bischoff says we are going to take a slightly early commercial here to restore order and then when we come back our eight man main event will be underway!

Sting, Lex Luger, Randy Savage and Road Warrior Hawk vs The Apocalypse (Brian Pillman and Arn Anderson) and The Faces of Fear (Meng and The Barbarian)

We’re back and Randy Savage and Meng are in the ring locking up because this huge eight man tag team bout is underway. Meng wrestles Savage into the corner and goes for a chop but Macho Man counters with a stiff shot to the head. Randy fires Meng into the ropes and goes for a jumping knee but instead gets met with a stiff headbutt! Meng then goes for a scoop slam but Savage drops behind Meng and delivers an atomic drop followed by a slam of his own! He heads to the top rope but then the match completely breaks down as Barbarian throws Savage off the top rope to the mat! Hawk then comes in and starts scrapping with his World War Three opponent which prompts Sting, Luger, Anderson and Pillman to all get involved! Eventually the fan favorites all clear the ring but not before Savage gets to the top rope and hits a huge crossbody to the outside which wipes everyone out! Savage then grabs Meng and brings him back into the ring before tagging in Sting. The Stinger whips Meng into the corner and goes for his signature splash but Meng gets the boot up and blocks the move. Meng then tags in the Barbarian and they wipe the Stinger out with a double clothesline. Barbarian covers: one…two…NO!

That double clothesline really has taken the wind out of Sting’s sails because Barbarian really dominates his opponent, chopping him right in the throat before throwing him across the ring. Barbarian then tags in US Champ and Sting’s World War Three opponent Arn Anderson who just starts teeing of on the Stinger. He hits a back suplex to his opponent before trying for a DDT but Sting pushes him away and then absolutely decks double A with a flying clothesline! Sting crawls towards his corner but Anderson grabs him by the ankle and drags him back towards the centre of the ring. Arn tags in Pillman next who just stomps away at Sting, punctuating his offence with a back breaker. Pillman then goes to the apron looking for some king of springboard maneuver but Randy Savage sees his chance and just decks Brian! The match once again breaks down as Anderson goes after Savage only to be cut off by Hawk who in turn then gets battered by The Faces of Fear! Luger stays in the corner however because amidst the chaos Sting makes the tag to Lex. Luger grabs Pillman away from the apron and drapes him over his shoulder and delivers a running powerslam! The cover: one…two…three?

NO! Arn Anderson is in to break the pinfall up as Savage and Hawk are busy fighting Meng and Barbarian on the outside. Anderson and Pillman then double team Luger as they both start stomping away on him before hooking him for a Double DDT! They can’t execute the move however because here comes Sting to knock both men down with a double shoulder block. Sting then whips Pillman into the corner and follows up by whipping Anderson into his partner and then crushing both men with a Stinger splash! Luger is recovered now and he hauls Pillman up into the torture rack as Sting locks in the scorpion deathlock! The fans explode at the possibility of a double submission finish but the joy is short lived because here comes Meng and Barbarian! Meng locks the Tongan death grip on Luger, forcing him to break the torture rack before Barbarian thrust kicks Sting right in the head. Meng has his grip tight on Luger who is the legal man but Hawk thinks fast, tags himself in and breaks Meng’s grip. Savage is back in now and he wipes out Barbarian and starts brawling with Anderson. The two tumble to the outside as Sting and Luger are laid out in the ring. Pillman is other legal man but he has also retreated to the outside and amidst the chaos has pulled out a tyre iron from underneath the ring. The referee is still dealing with Hawk going at it with the Faces of Fear in the ring but Pillman uses the weapon to knock out Savage as the crowd boo! In the ring Meng and Barbarian then plant Hawk with a double powerbomb! Anderson then clears both Sting and Luger out of the ring and with Savage knocked out on the outside its all over as legal man Pillman covers the downed road warrior! One…two…three!

Winners in 13 minutes, The Faces of Fear and The Apocalypse
