Chris Nolan to Direct?

The Daily Mail is reporting that The Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan has been approached to helm the next James Bond film. They say that talks are still in the early/informal stages with Nolan and his representatives but that Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson have started courting him for the job.

Previous reports on "Bond 24" indicate that the screenplay is currently being worked on, with MGM eyeing a release for the project within the next three years. Should Nolan sign on, this timetable might need to be altered to accomodate his schedule (he is currently working on Interstellar, which is scheduled to hit theaters on November 7, 2014).Nolan's track record, however, shows he is capable of churning out big projects in less than two years, so a 2016 release date isn't out of the question. Chris is an outspoken fan of James Bond and has expressed interest in directing one of the films in the past, so don't be surprised if this ends up happening, but for now it's just a rumor.

Do you want to see Christopher Nolan direct a James Bond Film? Why or why not?

While I've liked some of the Nolan films I just get the feeling that he's not right for Bond. Especially where we were left at the last movie where we were starting to incorporate gadgets. I guess I see Nolan making more of a Bourne Identity and less of a Bond.

Not to mention his third film will end with Bond dying or something Blue like that because he doesn't play well with others.

I like Nolan, but agree with you for some reason I can't see him fitting the Bond mold. Think they should stick with Mendes.

Agree'd, while he did wonders with the Batman movies I just dont see him fitting 007, especially coming off of Skyfall.

I had this conversation with a friend yesterday. I love Nolan, but I just don't see him directing Bond. He needs to do his own thing sine Batman's done. Write his own stuff like most of his others.

Think the reason for me is because looking at the Dark edge, and intelligent character driven Batman films I think they fit that world more than the world of Bond. I know some of the recent Bond's have been darker, but you still need to get the balance between that and entertainment. Also his Batman films were a little on the long side and I think a Bond film should been roughly two hours tops.

Nolan won't direct Bond 24 because of the scheduling issues. I don't really see him working with the series anyway as I feel that he would take the series too far away from what it is supposed to be. His style doesn't quite fit in with what Bond is supposed to be in my opinion. Sam Mendes did a brilliant job with Skyfall so it is a shame that he isn't coming back for a second dig at it although I can understand why he wouldn't.

Variety said:
James Bond will return to theaters in fall 2015 with “Skyfall” director Sam Mendes on board for the 24th film in the franchise along with Daniel Craig as the iconic British spy.

MGM topper Gary Barber and Sony toppers Michael Lynton and Amy Pascal made the announcement Thursday with producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli. Mendes, who had been expected to take the gig, will direct the screenplay written by John Logan.

The studios also announced Thursday that they have locked in release dates for the yet-to-be titled film, setting the U.K. launch for Oct. 23, 2015, and U.S. for Nov. 6, 2015.

Craig will be in his fourth iteration as Bond following “Casino Royale,” “Quantum of Solace” and “Skyfall.” He agreed last fall before “Skyfall” to appear in the 24th and 25th Bond films.

Logan, who penned “Skyfall,” also signed last fall to write the 24th and 25th Bond films.

“Skyfall,” which began its run in October, is the top grosser in the franchise with $1.1 billion worldwide, the best DVD/Blu-Ray seller and the all-time best performer at the U.K. box office. It also won Oscars for Adele’s original song and sound editing.

Mendes has been in London directing the stage musical “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” which opened June 25. He had indicated in March that he would not direct the 24th Bond film but was then reported in late May as being in negotiations to do so.

Mendes said in a statement, “I am very pleased that by giving me the time I need to honor all my theater commitments, the producers have made it possible for me to direct Bond 24. I very much look forward to taking up the reins again, and to working with Daniel Craig, Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli for a second time.”

Sony teamed with MGM to co-finance and distribute the last three Bond movies. It announced in April 2011 that it had come on board for the 23rd film, which became “Skyfall,” and the 24th.

Well Mendes has had a change of heart and will be back to direct again. Great news as he did a phenomenal job with Skyfall. Smart move to stick with the same formula after Skyfall was so successful, same director, same Bond and same writer will hopefully mean a similar quality Bond.

Over two years away, always drag these things out, the press will drive me nuts in that time.

That is the only negative with Bond, they don't rush through the films like some other franchises do. Would have been nice if they went back to a two year gap but at least it isn't the four year wait we suffered for Skyfall.
