Birmingham City Unveil “The Brickworks” — A World-Class 65,500-Seat Stadium Redefining Modern Football Architecture

Birmingham, UK — 27 June 2025 — Birmingham City Football Club today revealed, in a world-exclusive live event, the full vision for its new home: “The Brickworks”, a bold and uncompromising 65,500-capacity stadium set to become one of the most striking and ambitious sporting venues in world football.

Unveiled live to a global audience, The Brickworks represents a powerful fusion of Birmingham’s industrial heritage and cutting-edge stadium design, anchoring the future Sports & Entertainment District in East Birmingham.

At the heart of the design is a dramatic brick-led architectural language, paying tribute to the area’s historic brickworks that helped build the city. Rising from the structure are 12 monumental chimneys, forming an instantly recognisable skyline that overlooks Birmingham city centre and establishes a new civic landmark.

Key Stadium Features

  • Capacity: 65,500
  • Design Identity: Brick-based architecture inspired by East Birmingham’s industrial past
  • Signature Feature: 12 iconic chimneys, visible across the city skyline
  • Atmosphere: Two vast, steeply-tiered home and away “Ends”, both featuring safe standing, engineered to deliver one of the most intense matchday atmospheres in Europe
  • Innovation: Fully retractable roof and retractable pitch, allowing year-round use for football, concerts, and global events
  • Multi-Use Venue: Designed to host major international sporting events, concerts, and cultural showcases
The stadium has been conceived not only as a football ground, but as a global destination—a venue capable of rivaling the most advanced arenas in the world while remaining unmistakably Birmingham in character.

“This is not just a stadium. This is a statement,” said a club spokesperson during the unveiling.
The Brickworks reflects who we are as a club and as a city—industrial, resilient, bold, and forward-looking. From the brickwork to the chimneys, from the safe-standing ends to the retractable roof and pitch, this is a venue designed to inspire generations.”

With its scale, originality, and technical innovation, The Brickworks is set to be recognised as one of the most distinctive and interesting modern stadiums ever built, redefining expectations of what a football stadium can be.

Further announcements regarding construction timelines, public engagement, and transport integration will be released in the coming months as the project moves toward delivery.

THE BRICKWORKS

Design Manifesto

Built From Birmingham

Birmingham was built by hands, heat, and brick.

For generations, the brickworks of East Birmingham shaped the city’s skyline, fuelled its industry, and housed its people. Kilns burned day and night. Chimneys stood tall as symbols of productivity, resilience, and pride. Entire communities grew around them.

The Brickworks stadium is a contemporary continuation of that story.

This is not a stadium inspired by Birmingham.
It is a stadium made of Birmingham.

Brick as Identity, Not Decoration

Brick is not used as surface dressing.
It is the language of the building.

The stadium’s exterior is defined by sculpted brick forms—layered, textured, and expressive. Brick bends, rises, folds, and breathes, moving away from flat façades toward something tactile and human.

Each brick represents craft.
Each wall represents labour.
Each elevation represents history.

Modern engineering allows brick to behave in ways it never has before—curving façades, perforated patterns for light and ventilation, and deep shadows that change throughout the day. The stadium feels rooted, solid, permanent—like it has always belonged here.

The Twelve Chimneys

Twelve chimneys rise from The Brickworks, visible across the city.

They are not symbolic gestures.
They are architectural anchors.

  • Referencing the historic kiln chimneys of East Birmingham
  • Acting as vertical markers in the skyline
  • Housing functional spaces within the stadium
Together, they give the stadium a silhouette unlike any other in world football—a structure that feels industrial, monumental, and unmistakably local.

The Stands: Power, Proximity, Atmosphere

The Brickworks is designed from the inside out. Atmosphere comes first.

The Two Great Ends

At either end of the stadium sit two vast, steeply raked Ends, designed to generate relentless noise and visual intensity.

  • Safe standing at both Ends
  • High-capacity, continuous terraces
  • Close proximity to the pitch
  • Minimal barriers between supporters and players
These Ends are unapologetic. They are loud, intimidating, and deeply traditional—modern interpretations of English football’s most revered stand typologies.

This is where the stadium breathes.

Sideline Stands

The long-side stands balance intensity with comfort and clarity.

  • Continuous lower and upper tiers
  • Excellent sightlines from every seat
  • Integrated hospitality zones and lounges
  • Designed to keep fans close to the pitch without compromising scale
The bowl is compact, steep, and enclosed—ensuring sound stays in and pressure stays on.

Premium Seating & Hospitality

Luxury at The Brickworks is not detached from the crowd—it is woven into it.

Executive Boxes

  • Positioned between tiers along the sidelines
  • Private indoor lounges with direct outdoor seating
  • Brick-lined interiors echoing the stadium’s exterior language

Club Seats

  • Padded seating with enhanced legroom
  • Access to premium concourses, bars, and dining
  • Elevated views without isolation from matchday energy

Foundry Lounges

  • High-end hospitality spaces themed around Birmingham’s industrial past
  • Exposed materials: brick, steel, timber
  • Curated food, drink, and pre-match experiences

The Chimney Skybar

At the pinnacle of one of the twelve chimneys sits one of the stadium’s most dramatic features:

The Skybar

A vertical journey from ground to skyline.

  • A panoramic skybar overlooking Birmingham city centre
  • Floor-to-ceiling glass with uninterrupted views
  • Open year-round, not just on matchdays
  • Accessible via private lift
By day, it is a place to see the city stretch and breathe.
By night, it becomes a glowing beacon—light spilling from the chimney, visible across Birmingham.

The Skybar transforms the chimney from symbol into experience.

Innovation Beneath Industry

While rooted in heritage, The Brickworks is one of the most technically advanced stadiums ever conceived.

  • Retractable roof to protect atmosphere and enable all-weather events
  • Fully retractable pitch, allowing rapid transitions between football, concerts, and major global events
  • Seamless integration of sustainability systems and future-ready infrastructure
The result is a venue that feels historic and futuristic at the same time.

A Civic Landmark

The Brickworks is not just a home for Birmingham City Football Club.

It is:
  • A stadium
  • A skyline feature
  • A cultural venue
  • A statement of belief
Built from brick.
Built from history.
Built for the future.

SETTING THE SCENE - 9

By the Summer of 2024, the club had been promoted back to the Premier League for the first time in 13 years. With the promotion meant huge TV and commercial income. The club also unveiled the Brickworks which the ownership hoped would be the new home of the team from 2030. New commercial partners, Uber and Delta Airlines helped add more revenue streams as well as Bet MGM. The first team would say good bye to Gary Gardner, Neil Etheridge, with academy prospects Jordan James and George Hall also leaving the club to move to Renne and Plymouth Argyle respectively. Gardner would continue at the club as a first team coach.

SETTING THE SCENE

After the takeover, some of the main ground work had been the increased investment in the new B & C teams. The 2022/2023 season was a year to see what potential was already at the club in the U21/U18 age groups as well as starting to put together the new scouting teams to start to look at new options that could be signed in 2023 and 2024.

The B Team in 2024 was starting to look like the below.

FIRST TEAM SUMMER 2024 INCOMINGS

After automatic promotion to the Premier League, the club knew it needed to continue to invest in the best British and Irish players around to create a stronger team and that could stay in the league.

The philosophy of signing British and Irish players was now quite established and the rest of the Country was aware and quite impressed with the vision and disciplined. It was working. There were successes and it felt that there was less gambles than going abroad like most clubs.

JULY 2024 - BrickworksQtr.com

The Sports & Entertainment District

A New Heart for East Birmingham

The Sports & Entertainment District is a transformational regeneration project redefining East Birmingham through sport, culture, community, and connectivity.

Anchored by The Brickworks—Birmingham City Football Club’s new 65,500-capacity stadium—the district has been designed as a 365-day destination. At its core sits The Brickworks Quarter, a vibrant mixed-use neighbourhood combining elite sport, new homes, entertainment, and public realm, all underpinned by best-in-class transport infrastructure.

The Brickworks Quarter

The Brickworks Quarter is the cultural and civic heart of the district. Designed as a walkable, high-density urban neighbourhood, it brings together world-class sporting facilities, residential living, entertainment venues, and public space at unprecedented scale.

Key Components

  • The Brickworks Stadium – 65,500-capacity flagship football stadium
  • 18,500-Capacity Indoor Arena – A state-of-the-art venue for concerts, global tours, combat sports, basketball, esports, and major live events
  • 2,500 New Homes – A mixed-tenure residential neighbourhood, including affordable and family housing
  • Elite Training Ground & Academy – A next-generation performance and youth development campus
  • Brickworks Railway Station – A brand-new mainline station providing direct services to Birmingham New Street in under 8 minutes

This is not just a destination.
It is a new piece of city.
