it was the main issue with the show going forward, you nailed it though. he was the antagonist turned protagonist. Light ends up the big bad with no "great good guy" to go up against and they end up essentially having to nerf Light with shakey plot devices to make him beatable.
I still quite like how it ended even if it felt abrupt but yeah, woulda been better if they somehow revealed it was all a convulted plot that L laid out after death I just rewatched too so this is all fresh on my mind and I will say that part 2 was better to me this time, probably knowing the change was coming helped too
